Medicinally, turmeric is considered to be a strong antiseptic and is used to heal wounds, infections, jaundice, urinary diseases, ulcers, and also to reduce cholesterol levels. turmeric in the form of a paste has been used to treat external conditions such as psoriasis (anti-inflammatory) and athlete's foot (antifungal).
A major medicinal compound from C. longa is the phenolic constituent curcumin. |

Scientific evidence: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 116 people who had indigestion took either a 500-milligram (mg) capsule of curcumin (the substance that gives turmeric its yellow color) or a placebo four times a day. Nearly 90% of those taking curcumin experienced full or partial relief after seven days. |

Turmeric, a key ingredient in curry, has been used for centuries by practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine to treat inflammatory disorders, and turmeric extract containing curcumin (not to be confused with cumin, a spice commonly associated with Moroccan cooking) is available in most health-food stores as a dietary supplement for the treatment and prevention of rheumatoid arthritis. NIH researchers found that curcumin completely inhibited the onset of rheumatoid arthritis in animals by working to keep inflammatory proteins from being released and preventing destruction in the joints. |

Turmeric is one-fifth as powerful as cisplatin, which is one of the most powerful drugs in chemotherapy. turmeric is an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer. This comes back to inflammation. Many age-related diseases are caused by an immune system out of balance. Excessive or unnecessary inflammation accelerates heart disease, bone loss, Alzheimer's disease. Antioxidants found in vegetables and herbs are also important, because the same oxidation process that rusts our cars also deteriorates our bodies. Antioxidants mop up highly charged oxygen-free radicals that cause this sort of rust. |

Curcumin
The exotic aromas and flavors of Indian and some Asian cuisines owe much to turmeric, a spice that also has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin, a component of the turmeric root, is the key mediator of these beneficial properties. Curcumin has been shown in a great number of studies to possess remarkable qualities, including an ability to inhibit the development of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic nephropathy in experimental models, as well as to protect the nervous and cardiovascular systems and support a healthy colon. |

It contains turmeric, the anticancer spice I spoke about. turmeric is something that has these tremendous properties in it that help to combat environmental estrogens on many different levels.
When I go through the list of all the different things that stimulate the growth of breast cancer, the one thing you can't do anything about are these environmental estrogens. They come in the form of pesticides, herbicides and a couple of different chemicals. When some of these chemicals get into your body, turmeric makes them behave less like estrogen. |

Possible side effects: turmeric stimulates liver function, so it should be avoided by anyone who has gallstones or any other bile-duct obstruction. Preliminary studies show that curcumin may lessen the effectiveness of chemotherapy drugs, such as doxorubicin (Rubex) and cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan). If you are undergoing chemotherapy, talk to your doctor before taking curcumin. |

The Salt Issue
Limit your intake of normal table salt. It is processed sodium chloride and is as bad for you as any other processed food. On the other hand, sea salt in its natural form is essential for good cellular function. It contains trace minerals, including iodine—the mineral usually added to table salt, important for the health of the thyroid gland—in a concentration that is more usable by the body. |
