Bilberry
What is Bilberry and Where is it Found?
You may not have heard of the bilberry before. It is a cousin to the blueberry and the cranberry. In England it is called a whortleberry, the Scots know it as a blaeberry, and in America it is commonly called a huckleberry. But herbalists everywhere have agreed to call it a bilberry. |

In fact, the simple thing to remember is that every berry contains natural medicines and the smaller the berry, the more potent the medicine. So large berries like cherries, strawberries and grapes are not nearly as medicinally potent as tiny berries like cranberries, black raspberries, red raspberries, acai and red currants. The more vibrant the color of the berry, the more medicine it contains. Strong or bright colors indicate higher density of natural medicine.
To get the most benefits, eat a large diversity of berries on a regular basis. |

A few common wild berries include blackberry, black raspberry, thimbleberry, salmon berry, wild strawberry, huckleberry, cranberry, blueberry, and wild grape.
Cranberries are a good source of vitamin C, potassium, and many micronu-trients as well as a number of organic acids, including benzoic acid, malic acid, quinic acid, and citric acid. Cranberry juice can prevent and treat urinary tract infections as well as inhibit the growth of several types of yeast. |

In response to all the email and phone calls about these soap berries, we've decided to consider putting together a co-op soap berry buying arrangement where we pool the product demand of our readers and approach the various soap berry producers around the world to find the best price (and quality) for a bulk purchase. By doing this, we'll be able to acquire soap berries at a significantly reduced price while using more eco-friendly packaging. |

Red Zinger, or the berry teas are really good choices. You can make these in large containers to store in your refrigerator to have ready to consume as you would iced tea.
Another great option is to splash some cranberry extract into your water. Cranberry juice is famous for its antioxidant properties and support of a healthy urinary tract; its organic acids and fatty acids help keep bacteria from sticking to urinary tract cells. Cranberry can also decrease the incidence of constipation and urinary incontinence as well, especially in older people. |

Soap berry co-op summary
Email us at [email protected] to tell us how many kilos of soap berries you want to reserve. (No obligation. It's just an estimate.) Please include:
1) How many KILOs of soap berries would you be interested in purchasing.
2) Your first and last name.
3) The city, state and country in which you live.
The reason we want to know your country is that if there's enough demand in Australia, for example, we may arrange for a separate shipment to Australia that can be distributed locally at very low cost. |
But now, the soap berry industry is surging back, and you can be part of this rebirth of an industry that the planet desperately needs if we are to survive as a civilization.
As I said, it's about much more than cleaning your laundry. It's about survival. We either stop poisoning our homes and environment, or we will perish. And while soap berries alone can't save the planet, they are absolutely part of the solution. |
Their cultivation is earth-friendly and sustainable, which is in great contrast to the chemical production of laundry detergent which pollutes our waters, soils and bodies. Soap berry saponins can even be used to cleanse the soil and help rid it of toxic substances.
You can even make a natural garden pesticide out of soap berries, and use it to protect your plants from pests without poisoning your food or soil. It's truly an astounding solution for earth-friendly cleanliness, and it's provided by Mother Nature. |
Please note that $30 per kilo is less than half the price of the soap berry product we are currently offering (which is priced at $19 for 10 ounces, and that comes out to over $65 per kilo).
One kilogram of soap berries can clean from 100 - 150 loads of laundry. If we take the middle ground on this and assume it can clean 125 loads of laundry, the cost comes to 24 cents per load of laundry. That's actually LESS than many of the name-brand chemical laundry detergents. |
A few months ago, we announced a product called Maggie's Soap Nuts -- a natural soap and laundry detergent made from the dried shells of berries that grow on the soap berry tree. The reader response was tremendous, and over a thousand people have tried the product and liked it!
We received a lot of feedback about the soap berries. Readers were thrilled to find a natural soap product that worked so well and yet contained no synthetic chemicals or toxic fragrance additives. But we also received complaints about the price of the product. |

#9: Can juice products cure my cancer?
Probably not by themselves. Beating cancer with nutrition almost always requires these things:
Daily consumption of raw plants from the allium family (garlic is best)
Daily consumption of raw cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli)
Massive intake of vitamin D (under supervision of a naturopath)
Daily consumption of raw, freshly blended fruit and vegetable juices (includ beet, ginger, kale and all the superfruits you can find... |

My favorite jam is triple berry. Favorite pie? You guessed it-berry! One of the food products that gets me through winter is frozen berries; we blend smoothies year-round in the Magee house! And to me, summer hasn't really begun until I've gone to the farmers' market in my town and made a batch of triple berry jam (using less sugar, of course). I hold the jar up and announce, "The first jam of summer!" not unlike when the conductor shouts, "The first gift of Christmas!" in The Polar Express. Just in case you are timid about buying and storing berries, here are four basic tips. |

• Reduce dietary bladder irritants such as alcohol, chocolate, citrus fruits, coffee, black tea, tomatoes, vinegar, and sugar. quantity of liquids. Water and herbal teas related to the treatment goals are the most logical choices. Sixty-four ounces of liquids per day is the common recommendation. Urinating after intercourse is also an important bladder hygiene practice that can prevent recurring UTIs. |

Partridge berry remains popular today, particularly with women herbalists. Jeannine Parvati, author of a fascinating book, Hygieia: A Woman's Herbal, calls partridge berry her favorite pregnancy herb. She often combines it with raspberry, black haw, blessed thistle, licorice or sarsaparilla. Parvati suggests using the herb just before delivery.

On the Variability of Supplements
At this moment, I would not generally recommend berry supplements, and here's why. While foods have some variability in their antioxidant power, there are tremendous differences in the potency of supplements containing berry extracts.
In the summer of 1999, Tufts scientists published a paper on the variability of antioxidants in food supplements. They looked at 46 different commercial preparations, most of which were derived from berries known to be high in antioxidant power, including the European bilberry, cranberry, chokeberry, and elderberry. |

We made a berry version with all-organic, freeze-dried blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and cranberries called Living Fuel Super berry. The ingredients are organic freeze-dried berries and chia, along with rice protein, pea protein, enzymes, and probiotics. It's also got multivitamins, herbs, antioxidants, and minerals. That is an all-in-one. You can live on that.
The primary difference between the Super Greens and the Super berry is that one has vegetable greens and the other has berries. So they are slightly different. |

The goji berry is a very nutritious dried berry that grows up in Tibet and Mongolia. We like to call ours an authentic Tibetan berry. It is the mother strain, called the Lycium Eleganus, and it's very nutritious and very high in vitamin C, beta-carotene and trace minerals -- over 20 trace minerals, in fact. It also contains a full broad spectrum of amino acids, including all eight essential amino acids. It's very tasty, delicious and juicy -- it tastes quite a bit like a cherry, cranberry and raisin all mixed together. |

Berries are at the top of my product list, not only because they have such a unique sweet taste and come in beautiful shades of red, blue, and purple, but also because they are "berry" nutritious. A serving supplies a nice dose of fiber, vitamin C, and assorted other vitamins and minerals in addition to its impressive lineup of phytochemicals. Not sutprisingly, berry likes to talk about the difference between good farming and the most profitable farming. Still, he points out that everybody need not be a farmer in an agrarian society, nor need industrial production be limited to the bare necessities. The distinction in Berry's view is that agriculture and manufacturing in an agrarian society would be tailored to the local landscape. While it is difficulr to reconcile current ttends with this vision for an agrarian economy, a reoriented capitalism is not unimaginable. |

As she plucked the berry, Ida grazed her breast on the briar and bled onto the then-white raspberries, forever staining them a brilliant red colour. This legend travelled across time; at the beginning of the first century A.D., Pliny the Elder opined that Mount Ida, the highest summit on Crete, was the only place in the world where raspberries grew. Although it is likely that the origins of the raspberry bush were in the mountainous regions of eastern Asia rather than in Greece, botanists gave the berry the Latin name Rubus idaeus, or "Ida's briar" in honour of the old story. |

TOUCH
Much of what you observe about a plant can be corroborated by touching it. You may see the hairs on a plant, but when you touch them you can tell if they are smooth and soft or sharp and scratchy. The hairs may be soft like the ones on your arm or they may scratch in an irritating way. |

A lot of published research exists on the Lycium berry, most of it positive, but none of it strong enough to support the ridiculous claim that it cures cancer. But marketing hype aside, this is a great food. Published research that I was able to actually document showed that polysaccharides extracted from the Lycium barbarum have had a positive effect on insulin resistance in rats and have a neuroprotective effect on animal cells. Polysaccharides extracted from the Lycium berry also demonstrate strong antioxidant properties. |
