Immune system inhibitors such as coffee, sugar, alcohol, and fat are omitted.
At the end of three months, it is very important to follow up again with a health practitioner, and to obtain another Pap smear. Sometimes a biopsy is also needed.
IMMUNOAUGMENTIVE THERAPY (IAT)
Treating cervical cancer by restoring the patient's own immune system has also proven successful at John Clement's Immunology Research Center in Freeport in the Bahamas. Dr. Clement specifies that success can occur if the treatment is begun early, even after surgery. (See chapter 4, Breast Cancer. |

Celery is a particularly interesting recommendation for hypertension. It contains a 3-n-butyl phthalide which has been found to lower blood pressure. In animals, a very small amount of this compound lowered blood pressure by 12-14% and cholesterol by about 7%. The equivalent dose in humans can be supplied in about four ribs of celery. The research was prompted by the father of one of the researchers, who after eating a quarter-pound of celery every day for 1 week observed that his blood pressure had dropped from 158/96 to 118/82. |

Replace what you've lost. You need to drink as much liquid every day as you lose through perspiration and excretion. Otherwise, your body will become dehydrated. If you lose 5 percent of your body fluids and don't replace them, you may experience headache, fatigue, lack of concentration, and an elevated heart rate. Lose greater amounts, and you face the risk of confusion, shock, seizures, coma — even death.
Sip water throughout the day. Don't wait until you feel thirsty to drink a glass of water. Your thirst, especially as you get older, may not be a reliable gauge of your body's need. |
The whole-grain foods they studied included wheat germ and bran. Research data showed that eating about one serving of each per day dramatically reduced the risk of heart disease. People who ate a little less than one serving of wheat germ per day were 59 percent less likely to develop heart disease than people who rarely ate wheat germ. For bran, one serving per day reduced the risk of developing heart disease by 37 percent.
Of course, whole-grain foods have several heart-healthy things going for them, including fiber, folate, vitamin E, and potassium. |

Legumes can also be beneficial in hindering the formation of fibroids. Soy products, including soy beans, tofu, soy milk, miso, and tempeh, contain a good supply of isoflavones, which have been found to combat tumor growth. Numerous types of beans, including black beans, pinto beans, lentils, lima beans, and chickpeas, are useful in preparing a variety of meals and constitute a good protein source.
In addition to consuming adequate quantities of protein, it is important to drink a minimum of two quarts of purified water daily to promote proper functioning of the kidneys and bowels. |

Reduce polyunsaturated and saturated fats and oils. Use monounsaturated oils (such as olive oil) with special emphasis on omega-3s (fish oils and certain plant oils).
• Eat smaller portions of food more frequently throughout the day to optimize absorption of nutrients.
• Try to keep a balanced food intake, which ensures that 65% is complex carbohydrates (vegetables, fruits, and grains), 15% protein (fish, yogurt, eggs, and meat), and 20% fat.
• Make sure fruits and vegetables are thoroughly clean and free of parasites and bacteria by steaming lightly before eating. |

Few studies have investigated the effects of these changes, but the meager amount of research is generally supportive.*'7'8,9 Some symptoms of low blood sugar may be related to or made worse by food allergies (p. 8).10
Some people claim to have fewer symptoms when eating a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. However, research shows that increasing protein intake can actually impair the body's ability to process sugar,11 probably because protein increases insulin levels12 (insulin reduces blood sugar levels). |

The abundance of fiber in vegetarian diets helps the colon dispose of unnecessary estrogen, while the low fiber and high iron content of beef and processed foods can damage cells and encourage the spread of cancer. In addition, some foods, such as lima beans, soy beans, and other soy products, seem to have medicinal capabilities because of the presence of isoflavones and phytoestrogens, or plant estrogens. These substances actually curb the activity of the excess estrogen in the body's tissues. |

Preliminary evidence suggests that this has already improved blood folate levels in the elderly, who are at higher risk of deficiency because of lower folate absorption with age. It is destroyed by alcohol and up to 80 percent of alcoholics are folate deficient.83 Low folate intake (women causes birth defects (neural tube defects) and also leads to high blood levels of homocysteine, an amino acid toxic to arteries and nerve cells.8 |

Drinking water with a high-fiber meal or supplement results in softer, bulkier stools, which can move more easily. People with hemorrhoids accompanied by constipation should read about fiber in the chapter on constipation (p. 44).
Psyllium (p. 452) husk has also been useful in the treatment of diarrhea.5 People with hemorrhoids associated with chronic diarrhea should read the chapter on diarrhea (p. 58).

• Elevated blood pressure is a major risk factor for a heart attack or stroke.
• Since over eighty percent of patients with high blood pressure are in the borderline-to-moderate range, most cases of high blood pressure can be brought under control through changes in diet and lifestyle.

This so-called affluent diet is high in fat, which can more readily concentrate such chemicals as pesticides, preservatives, and industrial pollutants. The National Research Council's extensive 1982 report, entitled Diet, Nutrition, and Cancer, provided strong evidence that much of the rise in cancer rates may be related to typical U.S. dietary practices.
Excessive intake of animal protein: The high intake of animal protein is associated with an increased risk of breast, colon, pancreatic, kidney, prostate, and endometrial cancers. |
