The meat-and-potatoes lover, for instance, often eats few vegetables rich in carotene -the plant form of vitamin A that shows much promise for preventing cancer. The solution, obviously, is to consider a supplement. If your diet doesn't contain much of an important nutrient, it's better to take a supplement than to miss out on its special benefits. It is simply a better option than attempting to eat foods you don't like, because in our experience, this approach usually fails before long. A Personalized Approach There are too many recommendations. Too many diets.

Individuals who limit their consumption of beta-carotene-containing vegetables could be at higher risk of developing a vitamin A deficiency; however, because beta-carotene is not an essential nutrient, deficiencies do not occur. How Much Is Usually Taken? The most common beta-carotene supplement intake is probably 25,000 IU (15 mg) per day, though some people take as much as 100,000 IU (60 mg) per day. Whether the average person would benefit from supplementation with beta-carotene remains unclear. Are There Any Side Effects or Interactions?
Focus should be placed on fruits, vegetables, seeds, oats, and whole-grain products, although psyllium and glucomannan supplements also help in some studies. Eating fish also may afford some protection from diabetes.15 See Part 3 (p. 55) of the Diabetes chapter for information about fish oil supplements and diabetes. Vegetarians have been reported to have a low risk of NIDDM.16 When people with diabetic nerve damage switch to a vegan diet (no meat, dairy, or eggs), improvements have been reported after only several days.

Constant Craving: What Your Food Cravings Mean and How to Overcome Them

Since she was binge-eating dairy products in a crunchy form (from the vegetables), Rose's food-craving profile was that of someone who was both depressed and also frustrated or angry. Her dairy product choices were fairly high-fat ones, as well. This meant that she was probably struggling with some pangs of emptiness. I asked Rose, "What is the irritating part of your life that is making you feel depressed right now?" She looked at me, startled, with some of the color draining from her face. I had just blown her "cover"—the facade that told everyone that her life was perfect.

This aversion concerns some people because they know that vegetables are nutrient-rich and that they should eat them. Don't worry if you find yourself hating leafy greens at this stage. Your cravings for these wonderful foods will develop as your body adjusts to having enough good food for a change. Often people getting off the Cycles crave bread for a few weeks, some as much as a loaf a day! Other bread products that have been on the forbidden list a long time also become favorites at this stage: English muffins, bagels, bread sticks, etc. Should you indulge these cravings? Yes!

As expected, one hundred percent of the guinea pigs fed no vegetables died within fifteen days. Over fifty percent of those prefed cabbage survived. Those eating cabbage after irradiation also lived longer. Most likely to survive: guinea pigs that ate cabbage (or broccoli) both before and after the irradiation. (Beets provided no protection.) LONGEVITY FOOD In studies to ferret out the most potent anticancer foods in humans, cabbage in remarkable regularity turns up at the top.

SAMPLE GOAL #3: Eat at least five servings of fruit and vegetables daily. Always start the actual eating goals with foods that are the least likely to trigger fear. This shouldn't be too terribly frightening—it's about the quality of your eating and variety. Maybe this won't be your weak spot, but it is for many. If you undereat breads, for instance, then try setting a goal there. If you don't drink enough water or abuse diuretics, set specific goals about those things. SAMPLE GOAL #4: Do not weigh or measure food.
For example, you've already had two sandwiches one day, and although another sounds appealing, you decide on something different that sounds good as well, like a chicken Caesar salad and fruit, or pasta with vegetables. You're not ignoring your body's signals, you're simply using your head to enhance your diet. EATING PATTERNS DURING THE SHIFT TO BODY CONTROL Former undereaters who have gotten off the Cycles tend to eat in similar patterns.
Larry, a friend of mine, read Fit for Life and decided to try the program: fruit for breakfast, salad for lunch, properly combined protein and vegetables for supper. It sounded healthy and Larry wanted to increase his energy and stamina. The authors said he would. He tried to eat according to the recommendations for two years. Then he called me. Larry had been naturally thin for thirty years before he read Fit and now he had an eating disorder. He was confused and worried.

The more they were bribed with the promise of a sweet reward, the less the children preferred the taste of the vegetables or meats. In Birch's second study, children were offered food as a reward for performing some chore. For example, if a child cleaned the chalkboard, she was given a cookie. If she performed a math problem correctly, she got to eat some cake. All of the food rewards consisted of those that the children already liked prior to the experiment.
It is poured over ultra-crispy vegetables, which soothes the stressed, frustrated, or resentful person's need to gnaw. Individuals who thrive on high-adrenaline lifestyles—especially entertainment-industry professionals, stockbrokers, and salespersons—often crave spicy noodle Oriental food, such as traditional Thai dishes. The peppers pump you up, while the noodles calm you down—a food that's a perfect metaphor for this type of person's roller-coaster lifestyle. An interesting study was once conducted at Oriental restaurants by a very respected research team.
For example, my client Dianna tried a "high-protein" diet, where she was supposed to eat only meat, cheese, eggs, and a few vegetables. Within four days of beginning her diet, Dianna wanted a piece of bread so badly she could barely concentrate on anything else. The amount of food she wanted didn't change; Dianna just craved some nutritional variety. 2. We rebel against rules. Like most of us, Brenda hated to be told what to do. Each time she'd begin a new "diet," she felt like a little kid being punished and dominated. When Brenda cheated on her diets, it was her way of exercising control.
You walk into one of these huge restaurants, and you are instantly confronted with 50 different varieties of chopped vegetables, as well as salad toppings ranging from sunflower seeds to huge home-style croutons. You get to choose from ten different salad dressings, all of them appealing to the eye and the taste buds. Then there are the 12 pasta salads, the seafood salad, the pre-made Caesar salad, and Chinese chicken salad. And that's just the first half of the restaurant! Next, you walk past hot serving kitchens offering freshly baked biscuits and breads.

Other spring vegetables are also harvested, like asparagus, artichokes, chard, and celery. Citrus fruits may also be available, especially in the west and south, and these foods tend to be cleansing to the body systems. In my book, Staying Healthy With the Seasons, I discuss fasting on a specific lemonade formula. It is often a powerful and healing experience. Herb teas as spring purifiers may be beneficial. Sassafras bark, dandelion root, comfrey, nettles, mints, and more may be helpful to you.

But why don't undereaters crave nutrient-rich foods, like vegetables, whole-grain cereals, skim milk and fruit? The answer is simple—priorities. The body's top survival priority in a famine environment is fat storage because, without enough food to stay alive, a body's nutritional status doesn't count for much. If you're dead from starvation, does it really matter how nutrient-rich your diet has been recently? But don't undereaters need nutrients from quality foods, too?

For three days before ingesting the mushrooms, a person must remain abstinent from sex and refrain from eating poultry, pork, eggs, and vegetables. It also is forbidden to drink alcohol (mescal; cf. Agave spp.) or to use other drugs or medicines. During this time, a person should also refrain from agricultural activities. On the morning of the fourth day, he or she takes a bath and eats a light breakfast (of only foods made from maize; cf. Zea mays). He or she fasts for the rest of the day. On the morning after the session, the person must eat a large quantity of chili peppers (Capsicum spp.

Herring, salmon, mackerel, sardines, oils from vegetables, nuts, and seeds, and capsules of flaxseed, evening primrose, borage, or black currant seed are high in essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Some or all of these should be added to the diet. Skin lesions can be effectively treated with vitamin E from a capsule, or aloe vera gel slit from a living plant. To counter diabetic neuropathy, an excruciating nerve pain, purchase one of the several over-the-counter cayenne pepper (capsaicin) ointments. They usually come in two strengths and take about ten days to two weeks to show results.
Eat several citrus fruits each day, as well as yellow and orange vegetables. * EAR PROBLEMS EAR INFECTION Water Therapy Hot moist compresses help to relieve the pain of an inflammation of the outer ear. Alternate hot and cold compresses increase the absorption of inflammatory deposits. Hot salt bag applications will relieve acute ear pain. Place 2 pounds coarse salt in a cotton pillowcase or soft old towel and heat the salt bag in the oven until it is very hot. Wrap in an old soft cloth or pillowcase to prevent burning, and lie down with the afflicted ear against the salt bag.
To clear sinus passages each day drink up to 2 quarts of cleansing liquids such as water or unsalted freshly juiced vegetables. Take freeze-dried capsules of nettle leaf. Inhale steam from a room vaporizer, a boiling pot of water, or a steamy bathroom to thin mucus and ease its expulsion from clogged sinuses. To ease the pain from a sinus attack, apply hot moist cloths or a half-filled hot water bottle to the area of the cheekbones and eyes. Occasionally during the week, utilize these foot applications: hot leg baths alternated with hot and cold footbaths.
Avoid foods high in salt, which is often concealed in such foods as canned soup and vegetables, diet sodas, soy sauce, softened water, pickles, olives, ham, and bacon. Also avoid smoked and aged cheeses, animal fats, gravies, and coffee, because caffeine can temporarily raise blood pressure. Some susceptible people increase their blood pressure by eating sugar and processed foods containing sugar. Acupuncture treatments often show dramatic results by rebalancing the body and restoring function. Exercise at least three times a week, and practice yoga and yoga breathing. Take massage treatments.
Ginger can also be added to cereals, grains, vegetables, soup, or fruit. Another way to use ginger is to suck on crystallized ginger candy. The sugar can be soaked off—the ginger is still biting and delicious. Citrus fruits, which are high in vitamin C, help to fight infection. An old favorite for both laryngitis and sore throat is a combination of soothing hot lemonade and honey, drunk throughout the day. Scrub the outside rinds of 4 lemons. Cut them open and squeeze the juice into 1 quart of water. Add the clean rinds. Bring to a light boil. Pour into a large pitcher.

History & Folklore The young leaves and roasted seed pods are eaten as vegetables. Fiber from the stems is made into fishing nets, ropes, and sails. Due to the plant's high level of saponin (a substance that foams when agitated with water), it has been used to wash the hair. Medicinal Actions & Uses Australian Aborigines use the seeds to treat female sterility and indigestion, and as a painkiller. Caution Take only under professional advice. The seeds are toxic in large doses.
Cultivated varieties are grown around the world as vegetables and for medicinal use. The root is unearthed in autumn. Part Used Root. Constituents Radish contains glucosilinates, which yield a volatile oil, raphanin, and vitamin C. Raphanin has antibiotic properties. History & Folklore Herodotus (c. 485-c. 425 BC) wrote that the builders of the pyramids in ancient Egypt were paid in radishes, onions, and garlic. In Egypt, the plant was used as a vegetable and a medicine. In ancient Rome, radish oil was applied to treat skin diseases.
Constipation often results from insufficient intake of fruit, vegetables, and whole grains, while diarrhea is usually caused by intestinal infection or inflammation, such as food poisoning. Irritable bowel syndrome gives rise to alternating bouts of constipation and diarrhea, and spastic constipation results from tension and muscle spasm in the colon. HERBS Dandelion root, licorice, and yellow dock are mild laxatives. Senna is a strong laxative and should only be taken when other herbs have failed. Psyllium seeds and husks cleanse the colon and encourage normal bowel habits.

Use it to stuff poultry and vegetables. • Add it to soups and stews. • Serve it alongside lamb, with which it blends particularly well. • Mix it with rice for an interesting twist on plain rice. In addition to trying these basic uses, you can also look for barley that has been ground into flour. Use it instead of wheat in flatbreads or yeasted breads. Barley sprouts are the base for malt, too, and also for grain-based coffee substitutes.

In fact, of several vegetables tested—cabbage, turnip greens, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, and alfalfa—that helped rev up cancer defenses, brussels sprouts were the most potent—twice as protective as next in line, cabbage. In other tests brussels sprouts detoxified one of the world's most virulent carcinogens, aflatoxin, a fungal mold linked to high rates of cancer, especially liver cancer. Aflatoxin frequently contaminates such foods as peanuts, corn, and rice, and is a special threat in third world countries.

In Nepal, the young, tender leaves and stalks are cooked and eaten as vegetables (Malla 1982, 193). This use is the source of the German name for the leaves, kermesbeerspinat ("kermes berry spinach"). Ritual Use In ancient China, the root was placed into the same category as ginseng (Panax ginseng) and mandrake (Mandragora officinarum). The root also was used as a substitute for belladonna root (Atropa belladonna) (Emboden 1986, 164*). T'ao Hung-ching reported that the plant "is used by the Taoists.
Little is known about its effects: After consuming vegetables that had been contaminated with Mandragora autumnalis leaves, fifteen people developed symptoms of poisoning. The latent period was 1 to 4 hours, with a mean of 2.7 hours. No association between the latent period and the degree of intoxication was observed. All patients exhibited disturbances of vision, dry mouth, tachycardia, mydriasis, and reddening of the skin.
The freshly harvested capsules can be boiled in water for fifteen to twenty minutes (until they look like well-cooked vegetables). After the liquid has cooled, strain and drink. A clearly effective dosage consists of two handfuls of capsules per person. The tea tastes like artichoke water. The pods can be boiled together with the juice of half a lemon (which will apparently have a favorable effect upon the solubility of the alkaloids). The dried capsules can be prepared in a similar manner. These, however, are best when ground (e.g.
