Most of these chemicals occur naturally, such as those formed by the decay of animal and vegetable matter such as bark, leaves, and soil deposited in the water. Naturally occurring or-ganics populate surface water more than groundwater, because surface water is exposed to this matter more often than groundwater.
Other organic chemical pollutants are synthetic chemicals, such as pesticides and herbicides, that seep into groundwater, as well as the potent industrial solvents and hazardous wastes that are released into waterways or seep through waste sites. |

Of the studies that do link breast cancer to fat, some have suggested that the strongest association occurs with saturated fatty acids—the type of fat found in milk, meat, and some vegetable oils—although other studies have shown an association with dietary levels of fat in general.
There is also some evidence that increasing the amount of fiber in the diet can reduce gastrointestinal cancer. Again, studies have been mixed, and there is currently no absolute proof that this is so. Fiber, however, taken in moderate amounts is safe for most people. |

Eat easily digestible foods, such as rice cream, vegetable soup, steamed zucchini, and taro root. Chew food well before swallowing. As symptoms improve, gradually resume a normal, healthy diet.
• If digestion is sensitive, follow food-combining principles.
• Drink fresh, raw cabbage juice (one or two glasses a day for up to ten days) for its direct healing effect. Prolonged use may slow thyroid function.
NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS
• Take vitamin A (up to 50,000 I.U. daily—see warnings in Chapter Six), vitamin E (up to 800 I.U. |

Other common additives, such as monosodium glutamate, butylated hydroxyanisole and brominated vegetable oil, can create an alphabet soup's worth of problems; they've been linked with heart palpitations, nausea, headaches and nerve damage.
"Within minutes after you eat, molecules of that food are in every cell of your body," says Dr. Klaper. "There they produce changes in every level, from pH changes in your blood to membrane changes in your muscles and nerve cells. |
But if you're going to use vegetable oil, be sure to use a sheet that you don't mind getting rid of," he says, "because it will stain anything it touches."
If you're looking for a general massage to get you started, try a ten-minute foot massage from Elaine Stillerman, L.M.T., a massage therapist in New York City. "It can be stimulating or incredibly relaxing," says Stillerman. "Feet take a beating, no doubt about it. A general foot massage is powerful, soothing and relaxing."
Instructions and illustrations for this massage begin on page 572. |
Bailey's patients abstain from solid foods for several days, drawing their nourishment from large doses of fresh vegetable and fruit juices.
"Juice fasting enhances the body's natural healing capacity," explains Dr.
Bailey. "Juices provide optimal nutrition yet take very little energy to digest. And because you're not spending six hours trying to digest a fatty, high-protein meal, the body has more energy to devote to repairing itself. |
And another research team found that animals exposed to tobacco carcinogens were half as likely to develop lung cancer when fed a diet rich in watercress compared with those who didn't eat the vegetable.
These phytochemicals stop cancer in different ways. Have a piece of orange or some strawberries, and you'll consume flavonoids that prevent cancer-causing hormones from latching on to a cell, says Dr. Pierson. Have some green pepper or pineapple, and you'll get p-courmaric acid and chlorogenic acid, substances that stop cancer cells from forming. |

Fermentation of vegetable fibers in the large intestine by bacteria produces significant amounts of butyrate, a compound that can turn pre-malignant cells back to normal cells. Butyrate is the preferred energy source for the cells that line the colon. Butyrate is most effective in inhibiting colon cancer in the early stages of tumor development.

There is no need to measure your saturated fat intake or count your vegetable servings, however, if your diet is vegetarian and without added fat. There is almost no saturated fat in such a diet.
Dairy products may be a particular culprit because, in addition to whatever fat they hold, they also contain lactose sugar. Harvard researchers have found that when the diets of women with ovarian cancer are examined, they tend to be higher in dairy products. |

They are not essential, but they will make things easier:
• A food processor or blender
• An electric mixer
• A microwave oven
• A mandoline or comparable vegetable slicer
• A handheld immersion blender
• A dumpling press
• A garlic press
• A 9 72-inch springform pan
• A bundt cake pan
• Muffin tins
It is possible to get around all of this except for something that can puree foods and perhaps the muffin tins.

Using a natural or vegetable bristle skin brush, vigorously brush your entire body—while your skin is dry—with all strokes going in the direction of your heart. Take five minutes each morning and, if possible, at night as well. Begin at your feet and come up both legs; then do hands and arms, and finally, the torso, back and front, using a reasonable amount of pressure. Avoid brushing irritated, damaged, infected, or particularly sensitive areas of your body, and avoid using stiffer brushes until your skin is less sensitive. Use a softer bristle brush made especially for the face. |

If you see the words "partially hydrogenated vegetable oil," the food contains trans-fatty acids and should be avoided or eaten sparingly, especially if the oil is listed among the top four ingredients. Another tip: Labels that read "May contain one or more of the following" and then list partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, soybean oil or other oils also indicate that the product has been chemically changed and contains trans-fatty acids.
While they may lack saturated fat, hydrogenated products such as margarine can be even more dangerous to your heart. |

We both claimed alfalfa as an all-around vegetable source for most mineral needs. In addition to this, I added wheat or barley grass to the list, which she didn't. (See Product Appendix under Pines.)
Our conversation soon swung back to the subject of protein. We both concurred that the most ideal protein for a pet was an egg white. A close second was soybean (preferably in milk and tofu forms). We differed somewhat on the number of meaty meals to be served during typical week-long feedings. |

Petersen also makes a vegetable puree out of leftovers from the dinner table. "Both our dogs and cats really take to this," she remarked, provided she has added a touch of meat broth or oil to it. "Getting your dogs used to a vegetarian diet takes some time, patience, and gentle persuasion. It isn't something you accomplish in a week or even a month. There is a psychological strategy at work here. You must do it with love and understanding . . . and a little bribery." That's where the meat broths and fish oils come into play. |
They like just about anything in the vegetable line. You name it, and they probably like it: carrots, asparagus, kale, potatoes, celery, even lettuce sometimes. I'll either cook or grate most of these items, but always bake the potatoes. I've even juiced some of these things, such as mixing carrot juice with a little juice from celery, parsley, or lettuce. I then flavor it with a little beef or fish broth and they just lap it up.
"And when I give them dry food morning and night, I always add just a small amount of either broth. |
One teaspoon of Rex's Wheat Germ Oil in such a vegetable meat loaf or mixed in with other food every day will provide all the vitamin E needed. (See the Product Appendix under Anthropological Research Center to order this particular item.) Different types of sprouts may be made at home with the help of books on the subject. (My Heinerman's Encyclopedia of Nuts, Berries, and Seeds, from the same publisher as this book, provides detailed information on sprouting.) And cereal grasses, of course, may be obtained in bulk powder to add to a pet's regular food. (See the Product Appendix under Pines. |
Some nutritional supplements may be necessary besides the daily allotment of fresh juices or warm vegetable broth. Vitamin C in liquid form is helpful for rebuilding the immune system and increasing resistance to viral infection. I suggest 1,000 mg. daily, divided into four increments of 250 mg. each. This can be added to the dog's juice, broth, or drinking water.

A product called Mighty Greens is in my estimation the strongest source of mixed chlorophylls (grain, vegetable, and seaweed) that I've ever become acquainted with. Mixing one teaspoon of the powder in four ounces of spring water and six ounces of beef broth (dogs) or fish broth (cats) will definitely clear up the worst infection imaginable, even if nothing else is used. The stalk and young leaves have been eaten as a salad vegetable (Culpeper recommends the boiled leaf as a blood cleanser). Although historical references indicate extensive use of St Mary's thistle, even going back 2000 years, its use was revitalized in Germany in the mid-19th century and again in modern practice in the 1930s. Its main constituent, silymarin, has been extensively investigated, particularly as a hepatoprotective and antioxidant. The leaf of St Mary's thistle is also used medicinally but this monograph discusses the fruit (seed). |

Yes, it's difficult for a died-in-the-wool meat lover to change over to a more fruit and vegetable oriented diet. But Bob would not have had to become a vegetarian — he simply needed to mix in more greens, grains, and fish into his weekly diet. He could still cheat with a nice juicy steak now and then, and still see his cholesterol level drop steadily downward.
But instead, Bob trusted in the prescription drug industry and died from a horrible condition in which his own muscles dissolved, fowled up his kidneys and killed him. |
