Foods that may contain GM soy or corn derivatives or GM vegetable oil include: infant formula, salad dressing, bread, cereal, hamburgers and hotdogs, margarine, mayonnaise, crackers, cookies, chocolate, candy, fried food, chips, veggie burgers, meat substitutes, ice cream, frozen yogurt, torn, tamari, soy sauce, soy cheese, tomato sauce, protein powder, baking powder, alcohol, vanilla, powdered sugar, peanut butter, enriched flour and pasta. Non-food items include cosmetics, soaps, detergents, shampoo, and bubble bath. |
For example, "hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP), a commonly used flavor enhancer derived from corn and soy could be GMO,"11 says the Non-GMO Source. Vanillin can also be GM.
"Genetically engineered bacteria and fungi are routinely used as sources of enzymes for the manufacture of a wide variety of processed foods,"10 says GEO-PIE. The live organisms are not added to the foods themselves. Rather, they are grown in vats and produce large quantities of enzymes. The enzymes are removed, purified, and used in food production. |
Depending on the dish, some restaurants can switch cooking oils just for your meal—using olive oil instead of their normal vegetable oil. It's not likely, however, that they will do this for deep fried dishes. Italian, Greek, and Middle Eastern restaurants and many fine dining establishments tend to use olive oil anyway. It's usually easiest to phone ahead and speak to a cook.
In Europe where food is labeled if its ingredients contain even a small amount of GM content, restaurants are supposed to list if any of their foods contain GM ingredients or have the information available upon request. |

There isn't much to this beyond the oil and detergent cleansing agents. The small amount of alcohol won't be drying to the hair, and the salicylic acid has no effect on the hair (which is a good thing) because the pH of this shampoo is too high for it to exfoliate the scalp.

The common vegetable oils have a lot of the omega- 6 fatty acid but are deficient in the omega-3 type. The omega-3 group are chemically more reactive, have lower melting points (they are more liquid at room temperature), and are made in cold climate plants to make them more resistant to freezing. Omega-3 fatty acids are also found in soybean oil, walnut oil, wheat germ oil, and in seafood.
Obtaining the correct oils is not that simple, however. John Finnegan in his book The Facts about Fats discusses some of the problems in the preparation of the commercial oils and fats. |

The German Federal Ministry of Health published an unofficial draft, according to the recommendations of expert committees, regarding heavy metal limits (as of December 2000, see table below) for "plants, plant parts, vegetable oils, fats, waxes, and products thereof"; exempt are herbal drugs whose plant sources are known to uptake significant amounts of cadmium (so-called cadmium accumulators). Since the content of heavy metals is measured with AAS (Atomic-Absorp-tion-Spectroscopy), the tests are usually not conducted in a pharmacy or small quality control laboratory. |

In this seven-year study funded by the National Institutes of Health, more than 1,000 women, ages 65 to 80, were grouped into three categories: those with a high ratio of animal to vegetable protein, a middle range, and a low range. The women in the high ratio category had three times the rate of bone loss as the women in the low group, and nearly four times the rate of hip fractures.
Might this have been due to other factors than the ratio of animal to vegetable protein? According to the study's lead author, Deborah Sellmeyer, M.D. |

Soy oil alone comprises 80 percent of U.S. vegetable oil. Substantial portions of each of these four crops are genetically engineered and usually mixed together with their non-GM counterparts before being pressed into oil. Therefore, unless the oil specifically says "Non-GMO" or "Organic," it is probably genetically modified.
Non-GM substitute oils include olive, sunflower, safflower, butter (see dairy below), almond, and just about any other oil available.

Herbivores naturally graze on living vegetable material, although domestic horses and cows are fed grasses which have been cut, dried, and stored.
Whole
Animals that eat their prey will ingest all the available minerals, vitamins, and other food components whole. Carnivores often eat the internal organs first and later go after the muscle meats. With plant material there is a tremendous difference nutritionally between the various fractions of that food. Whole wheat is comprised of the germ, the bran, and the white endosperm. |

The following section on fruit deals only with those natural foods commonly used as fruits; the "vegetable fruits," as well as nuts, will be found in their respective sections. Botanically, fruits fall into four categories: aggregate fruits, such as bananas and dates, which grow in clusters; berries, such as strawberries and raspberries, which have many seeds throughout; drupes, such as peaches and plums, which contain a single stone or pit; and pomes, such as apples and pears, which contain cores and small seeds. |

It is unclear which foods had contributed to behavior problems. What is clear is that food can have a profound effect on behavior, mood, happiness, and our entire quality of life. Help children recognise the difference between yourinterest in their health and fitness, and the marketeers' interest in your money.
• Don't use food - especially unhealthy snack foods - as a reward or treat. Try to persuade grandparents and others to follow this rule too.
• Parental example is very important. If you have a sensible, balanced attitude to food and eating, your child will pick up on it - but if you gorge on unhealthy snacks, they'll want to as well. Raising a healthy child is great motivation to sort out your own eating habits. |

Soybean lecithin comes from the sludge left after crude soy oil goes through a "degumming" process. It is a waste product containing residues of solvents and pesticides and has a consistency ranging from a gummy fluid to a plastic solid. The color of lecithin ranges
SOY LECITHIN sludge to profit from a dirty tan to reddish brown. Manufacturers therefore subject lecithin to a bleaching process to turn it into a more appealing light yellow hue. |

Carrots
In studies done by Dr. Richard Shekelle and epidemiologist Regina Ziegler, carrots were shown to not only help reduce the lung-cancer risk of smokers, but to reduce the risk of cancer in ex-smokers and people exposed to cigarette smoke as well. Beta-carotene seems to be the key. Found in high concentrations in carrots, this nutrient seems to stop the formation of cancer in its later stages. |
