For example, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) national school lunch program counts French fried potatoes as a vegetable!
In contrast, people in rural China eat very little animal foods; they provide only about 10% of their total protein intake. The striking difference between the two dietary patterns is shown in two ways in Chart 14.1.8
These distinctions are typical of the dietary differences between Western cultures and traditional cultures. In general, people in Western countries are mostly meat eaters, and people in traditional countries are mostly plant eaters. |
Second, we needed to publicize the idea that advocating more vegetable and fruit consumption and less meat and high-fat foods was, itself, a scam. Third, we intended to position our committee as a permanent, standing organization. Up to this point, our group had only served in a temporary capacity, as an exploratory committee. Now it was time to get on with our job of becoming the permanent, principle source of reliable nutrition information in the U.S.
Within the first few days of arriving at the convention, a fellow member of the committee, Howard Applebaum, told me of the developing gossip. |

At least when the dairy industry describes all of these school-related activities in the official reports to Congress and in industry press releases, it rightly refers to them as "marketing" activities.
CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID
The dairy industry doesn't stop with kids. For adults, the industry puts a heavy emphasis on "science" and the communication of research results that might be construed as showing health benefits from eating dairy foods. |

Bitter melon also contains an insulinlike compound referred to as polypeptide P, or vegetable insulin. Since polypeptide P and bitter melon appear to have fewer side effects than insulin, they have been suggested as replacements for insulin in some patients. However, it may not be necessary to inject these insulin alternatives, as the oral administration of as little as 2 ounces of bitter melon juice has shown good results in clinical trials in patients with diabetes.
Bitter melon has also been found to contain antiviral proteins. |

But it was not a popular vegetable until the 1920s.
In 1923 D'Arrigo Bros. Company planted trial fields of Italian sprouting broccoli near San Jose, California, and later shipped the first ice-packed broccoli to eastern markets via railroad in the fall of 1924. In 1929, D'Arrigo started what is thought to be the first direct advertising program for broccoli with a cooperative radio program in Italian and space in some Italian-language newspapers. Development of the broccoli industry within California was rapid after this renewed popularity in the Italian communities on the East Coast. |

Carotenes are stored in adipose tissue, the liver, other organs (the adrenals, testes, and ovaries have the highest concentrations), and the skin. Ingesting large quantities of carotenes can lead to a yellowing of the skin known as caroteno-dermia. This occurrence is not serious; in fact, it may be beneficial in protecting against sun damage to the skin. |

For dinner, the dieter has (you guessed it) half a grapefruit plus as much meat as he or she wants and a green or red vegetable cooked in butter. People are encouraged to eat until they are full.
The sad and simple truth is that there are no shortcuts to the shape you want. Taking off pounds requires taking in less energy than you are using up. This equation has two parts: how much you eat and how much you exercise. Changing either part calls for more effort than many of us can muster in an environment that encourages us to eat more and exercise less. |

A reader suggested this root vegetable could do wonders for hemorrhoids. Peel and boil a rutabaga, then drain the fiber well to make a poultice. Spread it on gauze and put it on the hemorrhoids while the rutabaga mush is still warm. She learned this approach from her Scottish mother.
Olive oil is another option. It has antiinflammatory properties in the diet. One reader reports that it can soothe irritated hemorrhoids when used topically.

To design a properly noisy chip that people will buy, food rheologists have had to take their research lessons from those few members of the vegetable kingdom-lettuce, carrot, apple-that are naturally crispy when consumed. They make a crispy noise because they're composed of water-packed cells which pop open when you bite. When an apple or carrot is consumed, microscopic water jets geyser out at over 100 miles per hour at the point of tooth contact. How loud the explosive vegetable boom is will depend on how strong the balloon cell walls are, i.e. how much they can take before exploding. |

They are not as intense as a water fast because the naturally occurring sugars from vegetable and fruit juices prevent ketosis from occurring. Common juices include carrot, lemon, apple, beet, celery, and various greens, such as wheatgrass, spirulina, barley grass, and other super green foods. You should consume approximately 64 ounces of fresh juices daily. This type of fasting is indicated for people who are fasting for the first time or for those who cannot take time out of their schedules for a more intense fast.

TIPS FOR PREPARING
Wash bitter melon thoroughly under cold running water with a soft vegetable brush. If it has been waxed or is not organically grown, you will need to spray it with or soak it in a mild solution of additive-free soap or use a produce wash before eating. Slice bitter melon lengthwise and scoop out the seeds as you might with a cucumber. Unlike cucumbers', however, the seeds of a bitter melon should always be removed. To lessen the bitter flavor, soak bitter melon in salt water or parboil with a little salt before cooking. |

This includes sunlight and all kingdoms - mineral, vegetable, and animal (not to be eaten, but to be nourished by their Love energy). Once we understand that various densities of prana are the essential nutrients for all life function, we are able to expand our definitions of nutrition and assimilation. It allows us now to appreciate a paradigm of nutrition that sees material food as just one level of energy density in the context of a larger spectrum of nutrients important for aiding our spiritual development (see the figure). |

When the experiment was completed, and Laurie and Susy met and had the chance to talk, Susy told us that she did not live in a farmhouse, but there had been a cow in her backyard at one time, and her mother did have a flower and vegetable garden.
Who cared about a cow in the backyard? We, the "scientists" were interested in Betty's picture, not an old cow from Betty's and Susy's past. However, Laurie kept getting flooded with information and energy (facts and emotions) that distracted her from focusing on the drawing. |

A moderate-size salad or broth-based soup can help you feel full faster without contributing many calories.
Here are a few more ideas on how you can reduce the energy density of your food and feel full and satisfied.
Choose whole fruit over fruit juice—not only do you want the soluble fiber in the fruit, but commercially made fruit juices are pasteurized at high temperatures to kill bacteria. Cooking foods high in fructose (like fruit juice) is a great way to generate health-damaging dietary glycotoxins. |

Eimer found that when athletes reduced their protein intake from 100 grams of animal protein to 50 grams of vegetable protein, their performance improved.3 Dr. Chittenden, in extensive studies on soldiers and athletes, found that 30-50 grams per day is sufficient for maximum physical performance.4
It is also interesting to note that the average protein concentration in mother's milk is just 1.4 percent, sufficient to supply the human organism with all the essential amino acids and protein needed during the period of most rapid growth and brain development. |

Here, in his own words, is the advice he gave to his patients:
Vegetable Kingdom: In the vegetable kingdom eat anything and everything that is edible and for which you have no idiosyncrasy. Eat everything whole. Eat all of the edible parts of the food— especially the roughage. This food is preferably eaten raw; but when you cannot tolerate it raw, cook the food just sufficiently to make it tolerable.
Animal Kingdom: Eat any or all fish as fresh as possible and lightly cooked in the absence of animal fats (vegetable oils may be used). Eat the skin-free meat of poultry. |

Flesh food, being at the top of the food chain, has about fifteen times more pesticides and herbicides than vegetable food.7 Dairy products have about five times more pesticides and herbicides than vegetarian food.8 Fish contain high amounts of toxic PCBs,9 a major water contaminant from pesticide runoff. Shellfish accumulate about 70,000 times the concentration of pesticides and herbicides as the water around them.10 Fish can accumulate more than 3 million times the PCBs present in the water in which they live.11 PCBs are found in 100 percent of all sperm samples in humans. |

It's ironic and unfortunate that margarine and even vegetable shortening are touted as heart-healthful products. For years, doctors have told us to replace butter with margarine, and most brands of shortening loudly proclaim that they have less saturated at than butter does. But as you have probably heard, researchers have discovered that the hydrogenated process produces altered molecules called trans-fatty acids. These substances appear to pack a double whammy: not only do they raise LDL, they lower HDL and cause free radical damage. Not even butter does that kind of damage to your arteries. |

I found the following list of suggestions on an Australian government website, and have stuck it inside a kitchen cupboard door: jresh and dried jruit; crackers with cheese or peanut butter; yogurt; raisin bread, jruit loaf, toasted mujins; dips and biscuits or vegetable sticks; plain biscuits, scones or buns. I intend to add to it as I think of others - popcorn, sardines on toast and boiled egg have already been tagged on the end. Similarly, to save children from the soft-drinks trap, have only water, milk, diluted fruit juice or hot chocolate available. |

Protein and Spiritual Evolution
What can be said is that excess protein, whether from animal or vegetable sources, slows the flow of the subtle energy in the system and decreases our capacity as superconductors. It acts as a sludge to our body energy in general and specifically to the Kundalini energy. In fact, when the Kundalini energy becomes too intense for some individuals, the author often recommends eating lots of vegetarian protein, even meat on rare occasions, to slow it down. |
