Some people combine glucosamine with chondroitin, another safe in turmeric, curcumin, has potent anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. In some studies, curcumin has been shown to be as effective an anti-inflammatory as ibuprofen and cortisone. It works like the COX-2 inhibitors cele-coxib (Celebrex) and rofecoxib (Vioxx), but unlike the pharmaceuticals, it has minimal side effects.
Curcumin is available in some health food stores. Naturopathic physicians recommend taking 400 milligrams three times a day as a treatment for osteoarthritis. |

Melatonin is joined by pycnogenol (pine bark or grape seed extract), bilberry extract, and turmeric (cucurmin) and Vitamin C in their ability to elevate GTH levels.
Cholesterol, when oxidized in the blood, sticks to the lipoprotein(a) at the site of vessel injury and begins the cholesterol plaque problem in the wall of an artery. French researchers have shown that low levels of GTH in the blood are directly related to increased amounts of oxidized fats in the blood.
Nearly every cataract is correlated with low levels of GTH in the lens. |
Doses of 500 mg daily of turmeric were followed by a 11.6% fall in cholesterol and a rise in HDL of 29% within 7 days, when administered to persons with high cholesterol values.
Researchers in Taiwan confirmed these findings with 500 mg of curcumin daily and also noted a prevention of restenosis after balloon angioplasty using curcumin.
This can be found in the spice section of supermarkets and possibly health food stores.

Among the natural colors used are: annatto, carotene, chlorophyll, saffron, and turmeric. The big problem with coal tar colors, of course, is their potential as carcinogens but they are also potential sensitizers. Each batch of a coal tar color has to be certified as "safe." F & C Red No. 40 is one of the most widely used coal tar colorings. See also Yellow No. 5, Tartrazine, Coal Tar, Catechu Black, and Carmine. The word "pigment," however, usually means a colored or white chemical compound that is insoluble in a particular solvent. |
Among the natural colors widely used in cosmetics are alkanet, annatto, carotene, chlorophyll, cochineal, saffron, and turmeric.
Flavorings
A wide variety of spices, natural extractives, oleoresins, and essential oils are used in cosmetics. In fact, of the 3,000 additives known to be available for use in food, cosmetics, and drugs, 2,000 are flavorings that replace the flavors lost during processing. Of these flavorings, some 500 are natural—that is, they are derived from a wide variety of spices, plant extracts, and essential oils. |

Turmeric is the spice that gives curry blends their yellow color. It contains curcumin, a compound that has become pretty well known for its anti-inflammatory action.
Curcumin helps relieve joint pain in people with osteoarthritis and sports injuries. It works because it's a natural COX-2 inhibitor. Right now, pharmaceutical COX-2's are the hottest trend in mainstream medicine. |

As a rule, the prepared mustard we buy in stores—like the "English" mustard powder we make our own variants with—consists of white mustard, perhaps yellowed by an additive such as turmeric (a key ingredient in curry powders). The product's taste can be improved by adding (besides water) apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar, sugar, and salt. It can even be seasoned with honey, garlic, tarragon and much else. Black mustard is the most common in local "peasant" varieties of mustard, more notably in France and Sweden than anywhere else. |

If you have rheumatism that gets worse in cold weather, add a quarter of a teaspoon of turmeric and cinnamon to a little water and drink it as a tea.
Asafoetida is a spice available in Indian stores. A little added to cooking beans or other hard-to-digest foods will help cleanse the body and warm the joints.
One other thing you can use is the resin myrrh; a few drops added to your tea makes your joints feel warm and your blood move, bettering circulation.
Hadady says Asian medicine uses many herbs that can be added to cooking. For example, Tang Kuei increases circulation and warms joints. |
Although it should not be taken as a panacea, turmeric is very safe and is already used in many foods. It can also be taken in capsule form or made as a tea.
WILD INDIGO ROOT is not a very popular herb, but it is valuable for its direct antimicrobial activity, which helps fight infections throughout the body and particularly upper respiratory infections. More importantly, wild indigo root is a gastrointestinal tract stimulant, maintaining its levels of hydrochloric acid. |

Derived from turmeric, the spice that gives curry powder its distinctive yellow color, curcumin (not the same as cumin, which is also in curry powder) is a potent antioxidant that's been shown to be particularly helpful in reducing the free-radical damage inflicted on smokers by the carcinogenic chemicals in cigarettes. It also may reduce inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis. In fact, for some arthritis sufferers it has produced improvement that's comparable to phenylbutazone, a prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, with none of the unpleasant side effects of NSAIDs. |

Commission E also endorses turmeric for treating and preventing gall stones. It contains curcumin, a compound that has been tested for its effect on gall stones. It increases the solubility of bile, which prevents stone formation and increases the likelihood of eliminating any stones already formed. Add this spice to your cooking.
• Milk thistle contains silymarin, which protects the liver. Studies also indicate its ability to increase bile solubility, which helps prevent or alleviate gall stones.
• Make a tea using parsley. This herb prevents and treats gall stones. |

It is also known as yellow root, turmeric root, or orange root. People use it for coughs, menstrual problems, arthritis, and stomach upset. One of the active components in goldenseal, hydrastine, can constrict blood vessels. Although there is little research on drug interactions with goldenseal, we fear that this pharmacological action might raise blood pressure. This could complicate treatment for people taking antihypertensive medication, especially beta-blockers such as Corgard (nadolol), Inderal (propranolol), Lopressor (metoprolol), and Tenormin (atenolol). |

It has also been used medically as a digestive aid, a treatment for infections, arthritis, jaundice and other liver problems (1). turmeric is also widely employed in Chinese medicine, where it is known as "yellow ginger" (huang jiang). Traditional Chinese doctors use it to treat liver and gallbladder problems. It has many other medical uses: to promote bile secretions, increase appetite, lower blood pressure, alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. A Chinese scientific study even showed that it was "100 percent effective in preventing pregnancy in female rats," according to Dr. A. |

Varieties such as Tekkurpetta and Rajpore yield 30 to 33 tons of green turmeric per kilohectare. The curcumin content of commonly grown Indian varieties varies from 2.5% to 8.1% on dry matter basis, while volatile oil content, which provides aroma, varies from 1.8% to 5.6% on dry matter basis.43 Yields are reported to improve considerably with the timely use of Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium (NPK) fertilizer.

4. turmeric extract and curcumin in prevention and treatment of cancer
Cancer-causing agents (carcinogens) belong to a diversified group of chemicals, originating from food, food contaminants, food additives, food processing agents, environmental pollutants, synthetic chemicals, pharmaceutical drugs and cosmetics. The development of cancer is a multistep process, involving many factors rather than a single one. |

At the levels of use common in India, China and many other countries, turmeric appears to be a "natural, nontoxic food constituent" (10), which has been well-tolerated for thousands of years. It does not cause mutations in standard tests (11). At very high levels, however, it may pose problems. For example, pigs given large amounts of the spice suffered weight loss and other harmful changes after several months of constant feeding (12). At levels about one hundred times normal, the spice or its active constituent seemed capable of becoming toxic (13). |
An alcohol extract of turmeric as well as a cut-cumin ointment has now been shown to produce what scientists called "remarkable symptomatic relief' in patients with external cancerous lesions (5).
A reduction of offensive odors were noted in 90 percent of the cases and a reduction in itching in almost all the patients. Lesions dried up in 70 percent of the cases, and one-tenth of patients actually had a reduction in the size and pain of the skin growths. In many of the patients these effects lasted for several months. An adverse side effect was seen in only one of the 62 patients treated (5). |
