Silbert explains that there are four key supplements in nature's arsenal of inflammation fighters that may help sciatica—bromelain, the bioflavonoid quercetin, essential fatty acids, and the herb turmeric. They inhibit the production of bad prostaglandins that start inflammation, and they promote the production of good prostaglandins that fight it. In other words, they stop the bad guys and help the good guys. Fight the Flames Bromelain, an enzyme found in pineapple, is the jack-of-all-trades when it comes to fighting inflammation.

Inflammation Pain Tincture Yi teaspoon each tinctures ofbupleurum root, ginseng root, licorice root, echinacea root, yucca root and turmeric (if available) time you experience nerve damage or injury, you can count on it being pretty unpleasant. Neuralgia is the term doctors use to describe nerve pain— the sharp, often tingling pain that runs along a nerve and can sometimes create an uncomfortable dullness or numbing sensation.
Studies from India, where turmeric is a popular spice, show that it also improves the body's ability to break down and eliminate cholesterol. If you are a connoisseur of south Indian-style curry, you may already know about brindal berry. This small yellow fruit is advertised in the United States mostly as a treatment for weight loss—one of its traditional Ayurvedic uses—but modern studies show that it also lowers cholesterol. Garlic lovers will be happy to learn that there is less heart disease in areas of the world where people eat lots of the "stinking rose," as some affectionately call it.
You might be surprised how many anticlotting herbs you already have in your kitchen: garlic, onion, cayenne, lemongrass, turmeric and ginger. If you are thinking that this sounds like a recipe for curry, that's because it is. Studies reported in 1977 showed that garlic breaks down fibrin—the substance that blood clots are made of—and thus stops clots from forming. A 1992 study showed that garlic works even better to reduce blood clots when heated slightly; when you cook with garlic, you get a small medicinal dose.
And in another study, turmeric was found to be so effective that the authors who reported it in a 1986 article in a German medical journal regarded it as the treatment of choice for anyone prone to developing blood clots. Doctors recommend an aspirin a day to reduce your chance of blood clots and strokes. The aspirin helps by thinning your blood. Perhaps someday they will instead recommend the mo-er mushroom, also known as black tree fungus. For centuries, the Chinese have claimed that this fungus increases longevity but no one knew that it stopped blood from clotting.
These include turmeric, alfalfa and motherwort. Ginseng, feverfew and garlic also thin the blood to some degree. The immune herb baptisia contains a substance that is known to be toxic to animals in large amounts—it has poisoned animals who have overgrazed on it—but I could find no reports of it producing a toxic reaction in people. Baptisia is commonly used in Sweden, but is classified as a drug there. The New Herbal t, £ Outcasts Although herbs have been used for centuries, there are some very common herbs whose possible toxic reactions have begun to be noticed only recently.

Curcumin, which is found in the spice turmeric, and ascorbic acid, which is found in citrus fruits, both block the formation of nitrosamines, cancer-causing compounds. Frequently, a food will contain a multitude of phytochemicals from many chemical families, each with a variety of activities. Although chemists examine each phytochemical for the specific benefits it contributes, it is possible that the true value of phytochemicals comes in the interaction, or the synergy, among them.

It is used to preserve freshness of curry and various other foodstuffs. turmeric spice has been reported to have potent antioxidant properties.17 Tumeric contains an orange-yellow coloring matter with one of its constituents curcumin, though there are several curcuminoids, which have synergetic effects. Curcumin has been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory effects via inhibiting 5-lipoxygenase activity as well as the 12-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase activity.18 Curcumin has also shown anticarcinogenic effects, and it is theorized that it is an antioxidant.

Although most showed no effect, three spices and one herb tripled insulin activity: cinnamon, cloves, turmeric and bay leaves. Cinnamon was the most potent. Only a little cinnamon, such as the small amounts sprinkled on toast, can stimulate insulin activity, he says. A dash of cinnamon on any number of appropriate foods may help keep blood sugar in check. Thumbs Up: BRING ON THE BEANS Eat high carbohydrate, high-fiber foods, like legumes, to keep diabetes away and under control. That's mainstay advice for anyone concerned about diabetes, according to experts such as James Anderson, M.D.
Its main active ingredient is curcumin which gives turmeric its intense cadmium yellow color. Curcumin, studies show, is an anti-inflammatory agent on a par with cortisone, and has reduced inflammation in animals and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis in humans. In other tests, it lowered cholesterol, hindered platelet aggregation (blood clotting), protected the liver from toxins, boosted stomach defenses against acid, lowered blood sugar in diabetics, and was a powerful antagonist of numerous cancer-causing agents. It is known to have varied anticancer activity. Watermelon.
Foods with Antidiarrheal Activity Blueberries (dried), cinnamon, fenugreek seeds, garlic, ginger, licorice, nutmeg, rice, tea, turmeric. ANTIHYPERTENSIVES: HOW FOODS MAY LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE Many pharmaceutical blood pressure medications work in roundabout indirect ways, says William J. Elliott, assistant professor of medicine and pharmacology at the University of Chicago, and have "troubling side effects, such as fainting, drowsiness or impotence.
Major Foods with Anticancer Activity Garlic, cabbage, licorice, soybeans, ginger, umbelliferous vegetables (carrots, celery, parsnips), onions, tea, turmeric, citrus fruits (orange, grapefruit, lemon), whole wheat, flax, brown rice, solana-ceous vegetables (tomato, eggplant, peppers), cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts), oats, mints, oregano, cucumber, rosemary, sage, potato, thyme, chives, cantaloupe, basil, tarragon, barley, berries, seafood, olive oil.
Most potent are cloves, ginger, cumin and turmeric. "Cloves are stronger than aspirin in this respect," says Dr. Srivastava. The primary active agent in cloves is probably eugenol, which also helps protect the structure of platelets even after they have been "aggregated." Dr. Srivastava says the spices work through the prostaglandin system, somewhat the way aspirin, garlic and onions do. For example, all the spices clamped down on production of thromboxane, which is a potent promoter of platelet clumping.

During intense flare-ups, add some turmeric. This yellow spice contains one of nature's most powerful anti-inflammatory drugs, a chemical called curcumin. The herb has been used for thousands of years in India's traditional Ayurvedic medicine to treat pain and inflammation. Several clinical studies show that curcumin has an anti-inflammatory action. Don't reach into your spice cupboard for relief, however. Instead, opt for capsules of standardized extract that contain 97 percent pure curcumin. When pain is acute, Dr. Evans advises people to take 250 to 500 milligrams three times a day.

Curcumin is the principal active compound and the major yellow coloring in the spice turmeric, a component of curry powder. It offers a protective effect against cancer because it has the potential to block the spread of a tumor, a process known as metastasis. This phenolic phytochemical has strong antioxidant activities. It also inhibits the formation of carcinogenic nitrate compounds. In a study designed to test the power of curcumin to guard against cancer, rats were treated with a known colon carcinogen. The group of rats treated with curcumin developed 34-percent fewer cancers.

The best way to consume turmeric would be to use it as a spice on already healthy food. If there's a choice, food is always the best medicine, not capsules or pills.
