The "wear and tear" of a long life plays a big part in developing this disease. Years of moving your joints can rub away your cartilage. This soft tissue normally buffers the end of your bones and prevents them from rubbing together. Without it, your bones scrape together, causing terrible pain. But some scientists also believe an enzyme imbalance in your joints might contribute to the problem. |

Since it is a very cold herb, it should be used sparingly by those with coldness or indigestion with gas and bloatedness. |

Curcumin is the yellow pigment and active ingredient of the spice turmeric (Curcuma longa), which is the key spice in curry. The research may have been performed as a follow-up to a population study in Trinidad. About forty percent of the population are of Indian descent and use curry extensively in their diet. Another forty percent of the population are of African descent and rarely use curry. The Trinidadian study indicated that persons of African descent were more than ten times likelier to have the disease than persons of Indian descent. |

The Phase I detoxification enzymes are less active in old age. Aging also decreases blood flow though the liver, further aggravating the problem. Lack of the physical activity necessary for good circulation, combined with the poor nutrition commonly seen in the elderly, adds up to a significant impairment of detoxification capacity, which is typically found in aging individuals. |
The results of these studies indicate that turmeric or curcumin may provide benefit in the treatment of acute flare-ups of inflammation in RA. Furthermore, the safety and excellent tolerability of curcumin compared to standard drug treatment is a major advantage. Toxicity reactions to curcumin have not been reported. Animals fed very high levels of curcumin (3g/kg [1kg = 2.2 pounds] of body weight) have not exhibited any significant adverse effects.93
The recommended dosage for curcumin as an anti-inflammatory is 400 to 600 mg three times per day. |

OTHER PLANT ANTIOXIDANTS. turmeric, an ingredient of curry powder, contains the antioxidant curcumin, a polyphenol. In animal experiments long-term feeding of curcumin significantly reduced the ability of carcinogens to produce colon cancer. Yeast and yeast extracts (such as Marmite) are loaded with antioxidants (including glutathione and vitamin Q10).
Many herbal medicines have a high content of antioxidant phytochemicals. An ayurvedic—the ancient folk medicine of India—drug prepared from a number of plants is marketed today as a product named Geniforte. |

Lower-temperature steaming, boiling, broiling, stir-frying, and roasting are preferable to frying. It is particularly important to avoid all hydrogenated fats, oils, and margarines. |
