Cat's claw or una de gato (Uncaria tomentosa) is a South American tree. Its inner bark is used to treat arthritis. You can take it as a tea (the way the natives take it), in capsules, or in tincture form. Take 1 to 6 grams for a flare-up, or drink a cup or two of the tea a week as a preventive measure.

TURMERIC: Mellow with Yellow
The Indian spice turmeric, an ingredient in some kinds of mustard, is rich in a substance called curcumin, which can reduce the joint swelling, stiffness, and chronic pain of arthritis as well as or better than NSAIDs, but without the side effects, says Dr. Braly.
Curcumin relieves pain by blocking a number of inflammatory processes in the body and improving circulation to the painful area. Dr. Braly recommends taking a 200-milligram supplement two or three times a day until you are pain-free. |

Documented cases of radiation burn victims show more rapid healing when using aloe than with any other method of burn treatment. If turmeric is added to the gel, the healing process is even faster. In Java aloe juice is massaged into the hair and scalp to improve their condition and stimulate growth. The fresh gel is frequently used in cosmetic skin care products as an emollient and might well be worth a try, as the beautiful Cleopatra is known to have massaged it into her skin. Taken internally, aloe vera aids in assimilation, circulation, and elimination. |
The intensity of color is comparable to turmeric, only it is predominantly salmon red rather than mustard yellow. The plant's alternate name, lipstick tree, denotes its cosmetic use; but long before the term lipstick was coined, Amazonians used annatto as a body dye and insect repellent. The warlike Carib Indians used it to paint their bodies, and it was also used by the ancient Mayans in Guatemala. Annatto was introduced to the Philippines by

A basic spice in Indian curries, along with cayenne pepper, turmeric, and ginger, coriander is also used for pickles and sweet dishes, including certain types of cakes and baked goods. It has a well-established place in the food industry as a seasoning that not only improves the flavot and aroma of food but also makes heavier meats and pickled vegetables more digestible; it has the same effect when used in making breads and as an ingredient of curry powder. |

Skin Health—Eat Yourself Beautiful
Skin. Where would we be without it? Not only does it keep our insides in, but also it protects us from infection, radiation, and dehydration; keeps us warm; and makes us look good. While we are most aware of our "outside skin," the "inside skin" of the lungs and digestive tract covers a much larger area. |

The highly publicized legal tussles over turmeric, the neem tree, and basmati and jasmine rice fueled a bitter debate over the way patent laws allow companies to assume ownership of the knowledge of indigenous people from developing nations. A UN report called this gene drain the "silent theft of centuries of knowledge."9 The knowledge being lifted by international seed conglomerates included patents on tea, chutneys, coffee, pepper, cauliflower, cabbage, peas, melons, and hallucinogenic vines. |

More Pain-Busters. Increasing circulation always helps alleviate pain, because you are increasing the nutrients getting into the area, and the debris getting out. Circulation help is provided by vitamin E, vitamin C, glutathione, N-acetyl-cysteine, and alpha-lipoic acid. Exercise is important because it releases endorphins, and promotes release of natural cortisone. Since pain and discomfort are frequently accompanied by excessive anxiety and stress, it is important to find ways to relax. |

Curcuma is also described as an anti-inflammatory agent (Ammon and Wahl, 1990). turmeric has a long tradition as a spice and medicinal herb. Curcuma longa is used mainly as a spice (e.g., in curry) while C. xanthorrhiza is used more as a medicinal herb. Both plants contain yellow dyes, curcuminoids, and essential oil, with each species showing a typical composition. Both species are equivalent in their long-known cholagogic effects. In addition, curcuma preparations have been described as having carminative, lipid-lowering and antineoplastic properties. |
Curcuminoids are powerful antioxidants, and this property could form a basis for new therapeutic uses of turmeric. Reviews on the pharmacognosy, pharmacology, and therapeutic use of curcuma can be found in Hansel (1997) and in Fintelmann and Wegener (2001).
A four-week observational study of a C, longa extract (162 mg/d) administered at a dose of 162 mg/d demonstrated curative effects in 440 patients with functional dyspepsia (34 %), irritable bowel (36 %), functional disorders of the lower biliary tract (18 %), or other nonspecific digestive disorders (12 %). |

Some recommended herbs are boneset; boswellia (one of the best natural remedies for arthritis); burdock root, a great blood cleanser; cayenne pepper, long known for its antiarthritis power; devil's claw, which we've already mentioned as a uric-acid fighter and thus one of the best herbs to help our joints; stinging nettle; prickly ash bark; white willow bark; yucca; garlic; sea cucumber; ginger, as we've mentioned; buchu leaf; and turmeric. Use these all as directed. |
They focus on the natural antiinflammatory properties that are very common in herbs such as green tea, turmeric, rosemary, feverfew, and others. They conclude that because nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are associated with a reduced risk for several cancers, then natural plant antiinflammatories should be investigated as possible anticancer agents. |

Curcumin—is anti-inflammatory and hypocholesterolemic, inhibits platelet aggregation, and is protective to smokers
Curcumin, not to be mistaken fot the herb cumin, is the yellow pigment of turmeric (Curcuma longa) found in mustard and curry powder. Curcumin has gained popularity because of its antioxidant and antiplatelet aggregating qualities. Curcumin's ability to control platelet aggregation appears directly related to thromboxane inhibition (a promoter of aggregation) and an increase in prostacyclin activity, an inhibitot of aggregation (Srivastava et al. 1985; Toda et al. 1985). |

Hutt also asked her to take several anti-inflammatory supplements, including fish oil capsules (1,000 mg twice daily), as well as ginger, turmeric, and bromelain.
Anita's response was dramatic. After three weeks she had lost ten pounds and her glucose had normalized, enabling her to stop taking the glucose-lowering medications. Her pain, swelling, and stiffness decreased considerably, and her energy levels began increasing. At a six-week follow-up visit Anita had lost a total of eighteen pounds, and her blood pressure was normal, so she was able to stop taking the hypertensive medications. |

It seems to have an impressive ability to reduce pain and inflammation.1217 turmeric has been shown in some studies to be as effective as treatment with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), the usual treatment for pain associated with rheumatologic disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and postoperative pain.'7 Curcumin, an extract of turmeric, is thought to be able to stimulate the body's ability to release Cortisol (a hormone that regulates metabolism and maintains blood pressure), and to sensitize the body's receptors for this hormone. |
While it's still too early to recommend it for specific medicinal uses, turmeric shows early promise for several medical conditions, mainly due to the powerful properties of its major active component, curcumin.13 Curcumin consists mainly of the smaller bioactive components tumerone, atlantone, zingiberone, and heptanoids. Other compounds mainly consist of various proteins, sugars, resins, vitamins, and minerals.
If turmeric is proved to do even half of what it appears to do, it will be considered an important medicine. |

Turmeric, the spice itself, has long been used by Indian healers in the practice of Ayurvedic medicine to strengthen liver function, and many alternative practitioners today prescribe curcumin to people with the common liver ailment hepatitis C. turmeric also helps prevent the formation of blood clots that can lead to heart attack. As a supplement, one to three 500 mg. curcumin capsules daily with food is the suggested dosage. Many commercial preparations combine curcumin with bromelain, another anti-inflammatory. |

Anti-Inflammatory Supplements Curcumin
Curcumin, the active ingredient in the herb turmeric, is being investigated for use in Alzheimer's disease due to its potent anti-inflammatory action (Joe 1997; Grilli 1999).
Essential Fatty Acids
Essential fatty acids are found in oils including flax, borage, and fish oils. Fish oils contain EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), both of which are omega-3 oils. Essential fatty acids are important for healthy skin and hair. They also have significant antiinflammatory action. |
Among them are New York Presbyterian Hospital and the Weill Medi' cal College, which reported that curcumin, a cur-cumin-oid found in turmeric, directly inhibited the COX-2 enzyme (Zhang et al. 1999). So excited are various oncologists regarding curcumin that the potent anti-inflammatoty has been classed as a potential third generation cancer chemopreventive agent.
Pakistani researchers showed in 1999 that curcumin inhibited thromboxane A2 (TxA2), a highly unstable, biologically active compound created by COX from AA (Shah et al. 1999; Newmark et al. 2000). |
Curcumin
Curcumin, an exttact of the spice turmeric, is synergistic with genistein and may be effective in helping to suppress a number of escape mechanisms that are activated by radiation. These mechanisms of tumot suppression are:
• Inhibition of nuclear factor kappa-beta (NF-kB), a transcription factot that many cancers overexpress and use as a growth vehicle to escape cell regulatory control. Studies showed a 41% increase in radiosen-sitivity with NF-kB blockade (Plummet et al. 1999; Russo et al. 2001).
• Inhibition of the EGFR site. |
