Pineapples, blueberries, raisins, cloves, and ginger are also good sources.
Without manganese, a slow deterioration of muscle health—myasthenia gravis—can develop. Protein production and carbohydrate/fat metabolism would be inhibited. Manganese deficiencies can be related to blood-sugar disorders and sexual dysfunction. There is no official recommended daily requirement for manganese, but trace mineral experts suggest up to 7 mg daily. In the case of manganese, it is worthwhile to supplement your diet. |

Puree fruit with an ice cube and some ginger ale, and you've got a sorbet. Microwave sliced apples for two minutes at high temperature, top with cinnamon, and you've got a quick, low-calorie apple pie-type treat.
ž Try frozen fruit. When fresh fruit becomes scarce during the winter, a good alternative awaits you in the freezer aisle. Have you ever tried fruits that are frozen in one-pound plastic bags?
They cost a little more than fresh fruit, and they are a little mushy when thawed, but they are extremely sweet and flavorful, even though they are unsweetened. |

Add a little ground ginger, nutmeg, or cinnamon to suit your taste. Makes I cup of dressing
Comments: This dressing makes a good substitute for mayonnaise dressings. It goes well on fruit salads or carrot and apple (or pineapple) salad. You can even use it on pancakes, hot cereal, or fruit for breakfast The protein in the yogurt helps balance the sugar that's in the chutney. Just don't overdo it and start putting it on foods several times a day or even daily.

Although known to be an aspartame reactor, she did not realize that the ginger ale being ingested had aspartame. The lip and tongue problem subsided within one week after avoiding this beverage.
Dramatic throat reactions occurred in both a mother and daughter. The former wrote:
"I was drinking aspartame hot chocolate two or three times a day. One evening while taking a walk, I was unable to swallow. It was as if my throat was paralyzed. I didn't mention it to my daughter because I didn't want to frighten her. |

WHAT YOU NEED
Any combination of the following herbs (use fresh or powdered leaf or bruised seed): anise, cardamom, chamomile, cilantro, cinnamon, coriander, ginger, lavender, lemon balm, licorice, peppermint, red pepper, and spearmint
1 cup water
WHAT TO DO
Combine the herbs of your choice to taste. Steep 1 to 2 teaspoons of the plant material in the freshly boiled water for 10 minutes. Strain. Make sure that the tea has cooled slightly before drinking it.
Frankly, I can't believe that the experts, whoever they are, blame peppermint for causing heartburn. |
My top recommendations for IBD are peppermint and ginger, followed by chamomile and fennel. To make a tea from any of these herbs, simply steep 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried herb in a cup of freshly boiled water for 10 minutes. Then strain before drinking. If you wish, you can combine any or all of these herbs in proportions that suit your tastebuds.
Another herb that may be effective for IBD is asafetida. You may not have heard of this Middle Eastern garlic-scented spice before. I first encountered it in Iran many years ago. |
It's a close botanical relative of ginger, with similar cholesterol-cutting action.
In one study, people with high cholesterol who took a daily dose of turmeric extract containing 500 milligrams of curcuminoids, the herb's active compounds, saw their cholesterol plummet by 29 percent. That's a remarkable decrease for any treatment, one that rivals the best (and most expensive) pharmaceutical cholesterol medication.
To take advantage of turmeric's cholesterol-reducing effects, use more of the herb in your cooking. By itself, it has a pleasantly warm flavor. |
Dash of basil 1 quart water

Except for organ meats like liver, animal foods supply only small amounts of manganese. Thus, you can't expect much from meat, seafoods, poultry, or dairy products. In fact, if you eat the typical modern American diet of meat, refined flour and sugar products, and processed vegetables and fruits, you are probably one of the millions of Americans who is manganese deficient.

Africans liberally used their native "Grains of Paradise," or melequeta peppers (Aframomum mele-queta, a ginger unrelated to either the black pepper or the chili pepper), in their spicy cooking, so they were quick to adopt the new American peppers, and capsicums were disseminated virtually throughout Africa, as far as Mozambique on the southeastern coast.
The breadth of the chili peppers' dispersion in Africa resulted in part from a Portuguese policy intended to prevent unity among slaves and thus to reduce the likelihood of rebellion. |

Most prominent of these is turmeric (Curcuma longa), a spice derived from the root of a perennial tropical plant, similar to ginger. Because of its brilliant orange-yellow color and low price, it is sometimes known as the poor man's saffron. Turmeric gives color to curries, mustards, mayonnaises, pickles and sauces. Although relatively new to the West, turmeric has been used in southeast Asia for thousands of years. It is now also cultivated in many tropical countries, including Indonesia, Haiti and Jamaica. |
