To remove poison sprays and parasites from the surface of produce, soak fruits and vegetables for 20 minutes in a sink full of water to which V4 cup 3% HP is added; or use 1 tablespoon 3% HP per gallon of soak water. A quicker method is to spray 3% HP on produce, wait a minute or two, then rinse.
• Spray or water house plants with a solution of one ounce of 3% HP to a quart of water. They will become vibrant from the added oxygen.
• To purify drinking water of bacteria, add seven drops 35% food grade HP per gallon, or one pint 35% HP to 1,000 gallons. |
This includes most commercial fruits and vegetables.

4. Food eaten cold is more cooling.
5. Foods with blue, green or purple colors are usually more cooling than similar foods that are red, orange, or yellow (a green apple is more cooling than a red one).
6. Cooking methods that involve more cooking time, higher temperatures, greater pressure, dryness, and/or air circulation (such as convection-oven cooking) impart more warming qualities to food. |

Calcium has an important role in colon-cancer prevention. Many fruits and vegetables are high in calcium. Calcium combines with bile and harmful fatty acids, inactivating them until they are excreted.
• Add nutrients. Adding nutrients like omega-3 oils, found in flaxseed oil and fish; butyrate, found in goat cheese; and fructose oligosacchardies (FOS) derived from Jerusalem artichoke gives you further protection. These nutrients have tumor-inhibiting properties and exert antiinflammatory action. |

Homeopathy
One remedy worth trying is Causticum, says Stephen Messer, N.D., dean of the National Center for Homeopathy's summer school and a naturopathic physician in Eugene, Oregon. He suggests taking a 6C dose after every episode of incontinence for three to four days. If that doesn't help, he advises that you seek medical care. |

The French consume large amounts of fruits and vegetables in addition to large amounts of red wine. If you want to fortify your diet with red-wine polyphenols but prefer not to drink wine, you can enjoy purple grape juice. But you'll have to drink about three times more grape juice than wine to have the same heart-healthy effects.
NIACIN

In fact, of 46 foods containing fruits and vegetables, only four were associated with reduction in prostate cancer risk: tomato sauce (which had the strongest association), tomatoes, pizza, and strawberries (strawberries are not a source of lycopene).
Lycopene is best absorbed by the body when consumed as tomatoes that have been heat-processed and when a small amount of oil is present, such as in tomato sauce made with olive oil. Lycopene is more efficiently absorbed from tomato sauce, paste, or ketchup than it is from raw tomatoes. |

They are also used by many restaurants to keep fruits and vegetables at salad bars looking fresh and attractive. If you have asthma, it's best to avoid salad bars and to buy only unsulfured dried fruits. Monosodium glu-tamate (MSG) can also cause problems for some people with asthma, so avoid food products prepared with this additive. You should also be aware of "hidden" sources of MSG. These often show up on food labels as "hydrolyzed protein," "autolyzed yeast," "sodium caseinate," and "calcium caseinate. |

As a general rule, I suggest that people who want to eat a healthier diet include large quantities of fiber-rich raw fruits and vegetables, as well as a morning helping of wheat and oat bran. I recommend that they use fish, particularly fatty fish, and soy products as primary sources of protein and decrease their intake of beef, pork, and lamb, which are high in saturated fats, as well as of milk and milk products. Onions, garlic, and ginger by themselves and as ingredients in cooking other dishes are high on my list of recommended foods. |

Are there plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet? Do you avoid most processed, additive-laden foods? Do you smoke? Do you eat a good breakfast and get adequate rest? Do you exercise? Are you self-motivated? (Most centenarians have been self-employed for much of their lives.) Do you seek activities that give you joy and satisfaction?
The answers all depend on whether or not you feel in control of your life and thus whether you look forward to the future with hope or with fear. One ECaP member, a wonderful woman named Shirley, joined the group at the age of ninety-two. |

DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS
• Avoid sulfites, an asthma-aggravating agent, and other food additives and preservatives, found in processed fruits and vegetables.
NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS
• Take magnesium (up to 800 milligrams daily), vitamin C (3 to 4 grams a day), vitamin E (400 I.U. daily), beta-carotene (up to 100,000 I.U. daily under medical supervision), selenium (250 micrograms a day), and vitamin B-6 (up to 100 milligrams a day). Some individuals have responded to vitamin D (400 to 800 I.U. daily), vitamin A (25,000 to 50,000 I.U. daily) and calcium (1,000 to 1,500 milligrams daily). |

The practice of eating very expanded fruits and vegetables grown with chemical stimulants has partially balanced another extreme practice—excessive consumption of concentrated foods such as meat and eggs. Such "balancing" of extremes is typically unsuccessful over time.

People with normal or low iron stores would do well to include fruits and vegetables in their diet. This is not a justification for vitamin C supplements, which can be a problem, especially for people with high levels of stored iron.
If you are using dairy products for calcium, they are extremely low in iron and tend to crowd it out of the diet. You can get both calcium and iron from green vegetables. what to do about iron
Most people in Western countries have too much iron in their bodies, which promotes free radical damage. |

Vitamin C, which is also required for the production of collagen, is abundant in a variety of fruits and vegetables. Clearly, MSM offers a broad range of health benefits to humans and pets, and should be part of a comprehensive fresh raw diet.
Natural sources of MSM: fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, milk, and eggs. Animal protein foods contain higher amounts of this compound, particularly eggs.
Zinc
Zinc is found in virtually every cell in the body and is a component in more than two hundred enzymes. |
D-glucarate is found in fruits and vegetables and is also made in the body from glucose. It can also be ingested as a supplement. D-glucarate exhibits potent antioxidant activity.
Conjugation with glucuronic acid appears to be the principal conjugation pathway in the tissues of humans and all animals. This process is called glucuronidation. Glucuronidation appears to be an important mechanism for detoxification from compounds produced by the body and environmental toxins. This process is one of the major known detoxification pathways in tissues of all vertebrates. |

To best achieve chemopreventive levels of phytochemicals, a daily intake of at least five fruits and vegetables as part of a varied diet is the preferred method.
Engineered Foods
Foods that are fortified or genetically engineered are alternate methods of adding chemopreventive phytochemicals to the diet. Such foods are referred to as either functional foods or designer foods. Functional foods and designer foods are foods that are supplemented with ingredients naturally rich in disease-preventing substances. This may involve genetic engineering of food. |

As a result of not calculating children's food consumption and underestimating adults' consumption of fruits and vegetables, many of the maximum "acceptable" levels of pesticide residues set by the EPA are not safe for children. The NRDC estimates that if all preschool children were to eat the maximum allowable level of just three fungicides (captan, folpet, and manco-zeb), more than 20,000 of these children would develop cancer in their lifetime as a result of exposure during preschool years. |

Avoiding milk may help, strange as that may sound. As the milk sugar, lactose, is digested, it produces a simple sugar called galactose, which can enter the lens.20 Infants who lack the enzymes that normally break down galactose develop cataracts within the first year of life. When selecting fruits and vegetables, fresh is the best choice from the standpoint of flavor and nutritional value. It is usually the least expensive as well.
• Frozen vegetables and fruits are comparable to fresh in nutritional value and can be a big time-saver. Be sure to choose vegetables that are frozen without butter, oil, or sauces. Choose fruits that are frozen without added sugar.
• When buying canned fruit, select those that have been packed in their own juice rather than a sugar syrup.
• Whenever possible, choose foods with no added fats or oils. |

Natural sources of carotenoids: The richest dietary sources of carotenoids are fruits and vegetables, apricots, cantaloupe, carrots, leafy green vegetables, pumpkin, sweet potato, winter squash, tomatoes, red peppers, mangoes, broccoli, kale, and Swiss chard.50 There are other sources but this covers the bulk of them. Based on current research data, increased intake of a mixture of natural carotenoids, rather than beta carotene alone, may be a greater benefit in disease prevention and treatment. |

Add some extra fresh fruits and vegetables for snacks and you're ready to head to the store. Plan to shop at a time when you're not hungry to reduce the temptation of impulse items. When you get home, post your menu in a visible location so it can be easily referred to and followed.
You may find that you don't actually need to plan for three meals each day of the week. Breakfast, especially during the week, will probably be much the same from day to day. Lunches can be quickly assembled if you have food from previous meals on hand. |
If vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables are not front and center in our diet, we are laying ourselves open to the aging effects of free radicals. (Table 1.3, page 20, lists foods rich in vitamin C.)
Citrus fruits, strawberries, and green vegetables such as broccoli and Brussels sprouts are especially rich in vitamin C. As you eat them, you can almost feel their protection working its way into your blood. It is an extraordinary slayer of free radicals.
Its principal advocate was Nobel laureate Linus Pauling, who demonstrated the vitamin's power against colds. But that was just for starters. |

Preliminary research indicates that increased intake of fruits and vegetables is the preferred method of achieving chemopreventive doses of phytochemicals.
Another reason to choose food over supplements when seeking phytochemicals is that the study of phytochemicals is an emerging science. In addition to the phytochemicals that scientists are already familiar with, there are bound to be many as yet undiscovered compounds in vegetable foods that amplify health. If they have not yet been discovered, they cannot be included in supplements. |

Naturally occurring antioxidants are found in brightly colored fruits and vegetables, as well as dark green, leafy vegetables, green tea, and herbs. Though most antioxidants can be obtained from food, in people living under environmental and psychological stress, those with viral infections or cancer, and those eating a poor diet, the need for antioxidants is higher and supplements are required.
The most common nutritional antioxidants include vitamins C, E, B2, B6, B12, carotenoids (beta carotene), the minerals zinc and selenium, and the amino acids arginine, lysine, cysteine, and glutamine. |
