Epidemiologic studies have shown a connection between a high-fat diet and prostate cancer risk7 while other research has begun to show significant protection from risk by increasing intake of fruits, vegetables, and vitamin supplements.8,9 One study demonstrated a 45 percent risk reduction when subjects ate at least ten servings per week of tomato-based foods rich in lycopene.10 Other studies have focused on the preventive value of supplements, with promising results: • Vitamin E has shown an ability to inhibit prostate cancer growth in human cells11 as well as cell-culture studies.

Steep in a covered cup for 10 min. 1 teaspoon = approx. 3.2 g. Tea preparations: Star anise fruit tea is not offered as a single-herb tea (though there is a German Standard License monograph) but rather in combination with other herbs in lactagogue teas, metabolism teas, laxative teas, and cold and cough teas. Star anise fruit is employed in some tea formulas dispensed by practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Phytomedicines: Star anise oil, in combination with thyme herb fluidextract, is used in various products indicated for respiratory tract illnesses, e. g.

A climbing vine up to 20 m high with evergreen and dimorphous leaves; on non-flowering branches, they are 3-5 lobed with a white fan-like nervature; on flowering branches, they are rhombic to lanceolate (Fig. 2). Plant source: Hedera helix L. (ivy), Ara-liaceae. Synonyms: English Ivy, Common Ivy, Woodbind (Engl.), Lierre commun (Fr.), Efeublatter, Rankenefeu, Mauer-efeu, Totenranke, Eppig (Ger.), Folia Hederae helicis (Eat), Hoja de hiedra (Span.).
TLC Identification: A methylene chloride extract is analyzed for eugenol, acetyleugenol and caryophyllene, following the Ph. Eur. The clove oil (Caryo-phylli floris aetheroleum) monograph in the Ph. Eur. offers a suitable GC method and a sample chromatographic profile. Adulteration: Occurs very rarely. "Spent" cloves, whose oil has been removed, can be recognized with the "fingernail test" (see: Description). In distilled water, they float on the surface to some extent or lie horizontally, while the genuine, unspent drug sinks to the bottom or floats vertically.

What we know_ Where most Americans get their information about foods: Advertising Amount spent annually by Kellogg's to promote Frosted Flakes: $40 million36 Amount spent annually by the dairy industry on the "milk mustache" ads: $190 million37 Amount spent annually by McDonald's advertising its products: $800 million38 Amount spent annually by the National Cancer Institute promoting fruits and vegetables: $1 million39 It's been said that for every Ph.D. there is an equal and opposite Ph.D. But the data are clear enough.
With few exceptions, they are in fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans, including soy products. New studies provide additional mechanisms and insights to help understand why a plant-based diet is more healthful than one high in animal protein. For example, elevated blood levels of a substance called homocysteine may increase your risk of developing coronary heart disease. Animal protein in your diet increases your homocysteine levels, whereas folate and vitamins B-6, which are found in whole grains and green leafy vegetables, help reduce homocysteine levels.
All non-organic fruits and vegetables from tropical countries such as Mexico are likely today to be carrying residues of pesticides that are banned, but are nevertheless manufactured, in the United States. Monsanto has been convicted in U.S. courts of at least four major offenses, including neglect and widespread dissemination of misinforma-.tion and a $108 million liability finding in the case of the leukemia death of a Texas employee. The EPA ranks Monsanto's factories as among the largest generators of toxic emissions in the country.

Adulteration: In contrast to the round and serrulate leaves of Agathosma betulina, the leaves of other Agathosma species usually contain little or no diosphenol. The material of commerce can include the ovate leaves of Agathmosa crenulata (L.) PlLLANS (ovate buchu) or the longer leaves of A. serratifolia (CURTIS) spreeth (long buchu) and occasionally, A. ericifolia or Adenandra fragrans Roem. et schult. Many are carcinogenic. The name comes from the chemical structure—multiple rings of the aromatic solvent benzene. They say that a person eating the usda's recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables per day will eat illegal pesticides at least seventy-five times per year. Industry spokesman Dr. John McCarthy, the vice president for scientific and regulatory affairs for the Trade Association of Pesticides, said in This is excerpted from the 1995 ewg report A Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce. This report and many others are available at http://www.ewg.org. Have the most pesticides: • strawberries (have the highest level of vinclozolin, a known endocrine disruptor) • bell peppers (U.S.
Despite having lived an exemplary healthy lifestyle—often growing my own food; eating whole grains and organic vegetables and fruits; exercising diligently; meditating; and working with my emotional "stuff—I have had eight female surgeries, had a damaged uterus that could not support birth, and had to fight breast cancer. Now we know that the problem of hormone disruption goes far beyond des. I have worked in the field of health for many years, as well as constantly working on healing myself.
Soybeans, mung beans, clover, whole grains, and many fruits, nuts, and vegetables contain some of these phytoestrogens, which can occupy receptor sites that otherwise would have been available to bind with more potent estrogens, thus acting as a protection for the body. This may be one reason that lifelong vegetarians have a lower risk for estrogen-dependent health disorders such as breast cancer. Some foods are turned into phytoestrogens during the process of metabolism in the intestines. A round of therapeutic antibiotics can knock out this intestinal ability for several months.

Canned and frozen fruits and vegetables are probably better than none at all. Isn't it intetesting how everything comes full circle? The same foods that have been recommended for so many other reasons—their nutrients in the classic sense, their low fat content, their fiber, theit displacement of unhealthy foods—are also the foods being found to contain these health-promoting substances. Coincidence? Note also that no one has yet turned up any potent health-enhancing phytochemicals in steak, milk, or Twinkies. At any rate, now you have yet another reason to emphasize plant foods in your diet.

Pesticides on fruits and Vegetables If you eat in the United States or virtually any developed country, you eat pesticides, many of which are known hormone disruptors or have not yet been tested for hormone disruption. According to the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit national research organization whose work has been generally accepted by the scientific community, "You eat small amounts of numerous pesticides, you quite likely eat them every day, and quite possibly in nearly every meal.

As a member of the FDA Food Advisory Committee at the time, I saw this particular situation as a missed opportunity for developing a nationwide education campaign to encourage everyone to eat more fruits and vegetables—the primary dietary sources of folate as well as of so many other health-promoting nutrients and components. Federal officials considered this idea unrealistic, however, not least because of the substantial cost of such a campaign.

The National Cancer Institute has called on all citizens to consume five portions of fruits and vegetables per day. Especially important are soy, garlic and onions, shiitake mushrooms, broccoli, clover and mung sprouts, and carrot juice. Most of the herbal treatments deserve serious consideration. However, as a general guideline, I would especially scrutinize those that are heavily hyped, sold through multi-level-marketing or network programs, make too-good-to-be-true claims, or originate from offshore companies operating out of post office boxes in the Third World.

We must speak out about the unacceptably high levels of pesticides in our fruits and vegetables, about the lack of pure water and air. I believe that every voice makes a difference. We must go back to basic, simple living in harmony with nature before it is too late. In the meantime, here are a few tips to make the home environment a safer place: • Don't use electric blankets. They alter the electromagnetic polarization of the cell membrane; cancer cells are defined by a loss of cell-membrane polarization.
This susceptibility can be inhibited by a diet of sulfur-rich foods, such as broccoli, cauliflower, and other cruciferous vegetables along with foods rich in carotenoids and chlorophyll (most fruits and vegetables) and flavonoids, such as green tea, grapes, berries, plums, and tangerines. Spices and herbs in this family include garlic, turmeric, and ginger. 2. Promotion. During this stage, the transformed cells are prompted by certain nutrients or metabolites to divide and multiply. As a result, minute precancerous masses are formed, but they are not yet malignant.
The variations in these diets are staggering and confusing— one says eat vegan with raw foods only; another suggests vegan with cooked foods; some eliminate fruits; most ban eggs, dairy, and meat. I recommend a diet that supports optimal personal health, a diet designed specifically for each individual's well-being and healing. Among my clients I have seen the need for very diverse dietary requirements. Although I believe that a vegetarian diet is morally, ethically, and generally a healthier diet, it is not appropriate for everyone.
These anthocyans are members of the bioflavonoid family and are found in certain fruits, vegetables, and plants such as berries, nuts, and grapes.13 In human studies, patients with varied conditions, such as cancer, lung disease, drug toxicities, kidney dysfunction, infertility, stroke, alcoholic liver disease, and radiation sickness, have shown functional improvements when taking oral reduced glutathione supplementation.
First of all, be sure to drink plenty of fluids (hot fluids or herbal teas are best) and eat high-fiber foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Avoid cheese and refined carbohydrates, such as white rice, flour, and sugar. Also include soaked dried fruit, ground flaxseeds, and flaxseed oil in your diet. Do not take laxatives. Helpful nutritional supplements include: • Magnesium, nature's natural laxative, or trace-mineral tablets rich in magnesium. Dose: Magnesium—200 to 1,000 mg daily in divided doses. Trace mineral tablets—2 to 6 tablets daily in divided doses.

In another example, vinclozolin (a fungicide used on many common fruits and vegetables) breaks down into two metabolites, Mi and M2, which have been studied for endocrine disruption and have been found to bind to the androgen receptor and block its signaling. • Even a weak estrogen given at a critical time can produce irreversible effects. Weak environmental estrogens may also synergize with stronger natural estrogens. This is accomplished through several mechanisms.

Like other antioxidants contained in fruits and vegetables, the compounds in oregano may help prevent the cell damage caused by free radicals—highly unstable oxygen molecules that steal electrons from other molecules they encounter. Free radical reactions are probably involved in inflammation, degenerative arthritis and the aging process in general. And evidence is accumulating that antioxidants may help relieve osteoarthritis and RA. In a test of nearly 100 plants in the mint family, of which oregano is a member, the pizza herb was the one that had the greatest total antioxidant activity.

Noteworthy, is that foods rich in potassium such as vegetables and fruits also contain other substances (such as beta-carotene, vitamin E, vitamin C, selenium and zinc) that we are discovering might very well protect against cancer. Therefore, Gerson might have been on a right track, after all—though not simply because of potassium. Related to Negative Claims: 1) Toxic—Diets rich in potassium are unlikely to have adverse effects except for patients with kidney failure. Normally, we can process all the potassium from our diets that our bodies require and excrete the rest.
Fresh vegetables and fruits generally contain more myo-inositol than do frozen, canned, or salt-free products. A quarter of a fresh cantaloupe of average size contains 335 milligrams; one orange contains 307 milligrams; one-half of a grapefruit has 200 milligrams; one-half cup of frozen concentrate of grapefruit juice contains 456 milligrams; one-half cup of frozen concentrate of orange juice has 245 milligrams; one slice of whole-wheat bread contains 288 milligrams. Myo-inositol is available in health food stores.
In Colombia, the mucilaginous fruits of the alfalfa plant are used to treat coughs. Alfalfa seeds and sprouts contain the amino acid L-canaverine, which is structurally related to the amino acid L-arginine. L-canaverine has been shown to have anti-tumor activity against certain types of leukemia cells in mice and selective toxicity in dog cancer cells grown in vitro. L-canaverine inhibits the growth of certain bacteria and this could be the basis for the anti-bacterial action of alfalfa extracts.

Naturopaths suggest eating more fruits and vegetables to combat infections. They are rich in vitamins, particularly beta-carotene (the vitamin A precursor) and vitamins C and E. You might also take a multivitamin supplement, if you don't already. One study of elderly people showed that a daily multivitamin significantly improved their immune function. Here's a quote from one of the thousands of letters I have received over the years, written by people disillusioned enough with their physicians to seek an alternative: "My husband, age 57, suffered a stroke a year ago.
The research is consistent and compelling: The more fruits and vegetables people eat, the less likely they are to develop every major cancer, including lung cancer. So even if you don't quit smoking, you should still be munching on carrots. Sores Iwant to open this chapter with a couple of remarkable stories of just what herbs can do when it comes to healing sores. I have a friend whose father has diabetes. Like many people with diabetes, he developed foot problems to the point where his doctor advised amputating one of his toes, which had become seriously ulcerated.
