You Suffer from Gallbladder Disease or Don't Have a Gallbladder
If you suffer from gallbladder disease or your gallbladder has already been removed, you may need to take cranberry juice or gold coin grass for 2 to 3 weeks (approximately a 1-bottle supply) before liver cleansing. For details, see the previous and following sections.
As a general recommendation, you may also need to consider taking a bile supplement. Most bile supplements contain ox bile. Without a gallbladder, you may never again obtain the right amount of bile needed for the proper digestion of food. |
If you still cannot tolerate apple juice, you may substitute 1,500 to 2,000 mg of malic acid powder dissolved in two glasses of water. cranberry juice, the herb gold coin grass, and apple cider vinegar are other good alternatives. (See details in Chapter 4.)
Q. Would it be better to do the liver cleanses in intervals of two to three weeks or spread them over a longer period of time, say one every two or three months?
A. This is up to you to decide. I recommend that, once you have started liver cleansing, you continue cleansing at regular intervals until all gallstones are removed. |

Add V2 cup water or fruit juice (orange juice, cranberry juice, or another juice) to thin as needed, or use low-fat, unsweetened plain yogurt.
4. Don't add sugar; the fruit has sugar to sweeten the smoothie.
5. Add slices of avocado to the blender mixture for the creamiest smoothie ever.
Quick tip: Buy fresh baby spinach leaves, wash them, and freeze them in a large, sealed plastic bag. Once these are frozen, crush the leaves in the bag, and put them back in the freezer so you have handy frozen spinach flakes that you can add to smoothies or other dishes. |

Eight to sixteen ounces of unsweetened cranberry juice per day is recommended. Mannose, the simple sugar contained in cranberries, is a very effective and safe treatment during pregnancy. D-mannose adheres to the bladder epithelium and interferes with the ability of infection-causing bacteria such as E. coli to adhere to the bladder wall.146
Lactobacillus supplements are also safe in pregnancy. From the studies that are available, probiotics appear to be beneficial for preventing recurrent bladder infections in women. See Chapter 5 for further directions on treating bladder infections. |
Conventional medicine has also borrowed freely from the naturopathic community, commonly employing prophylactic regimens of cranberry preparations and acidophilus. Blueberries also have abundant proanthocyanidins and are, therefore, recommended as well. Current literature discourages the use of vitamin C, as it has not proven to be of benefit. In the postmenopausal population, topical estrogen therapy has also been shown to prevent infection.
Due to the prevalence of UTI among women, there is a great impetus to develop new, non-antimicrobial preventative therapies. |
Drink fresh juices, especially berry juices including cranberry and blueberry.
• Eat fermented milk products containing probi-otic bacteria.
• Reduce dietary bladder irritants such as alcohol, chocolate, citrus fruits, coffee, black tea, tomatoes, vinegar, and sugar. quantity of liquids. Water and herbal teas related to the treatment goals are the most logical choices. Sixty-four ounces of liquids per day is the common recommendation. Urinating after intercourse is also an important bladder hygiene practice that can prevent recurring UTIs. |
D-mannose is a naturally occurring simple sugar contained in cranberry juice that is helpful in treatment of UTIs. D-mannose adheres to the bladder epithelium, interfering with the ability of the R coli to adhere21 and cause infection. It is likely safe for pregnant and lactating women.

• Aminotriazole (herbicide used on cranberry crops, causing the "cranberry scare'" of 1959)
• DDT (widely known after Rachel Carson's book, Silent Spring)
• Nitrites (a meat preservative and color and flavor enhancer used in hot dogs and bacon)
• Red Dye Number 2
• Artificial sweeteners (including cyclamates and saccharin)
• Dioxin (a contaminant of industrial processes and of Agent Orange, a defoliant used during the Vietnam War)
• Anatoxin (a fungal toxin found on moldy peanuts and corn)
I know these unsavory chemicals quite well. |

Today, cranberries are mostly drunk in the form of juice, which is a pity: commercial cranberry juice drinks contain large quantities of sugar and far fewer amounts of the phytochemical molecules that confer beneficial properties to the cranberry itself.
Popular tradition ascribes a special, well-known role to cranberries in the treatment of urinary infection. Seeing American Indians use cranberries to treat bladder and kidney disorders allowed early settlers to discover the therapeutic effects of these small berries. |

Cranberry juice has a high calorific content, and patients with diabetes who wish to use cranberry juice should use sugar-free preparations. Interference with some urine dipstick tests for glucose and haemoglobin has been reported after patients had consumed cranberry juice daily for several weeks (see Jepson et al 2000, Kontiokari et al 2001).
INSECTICIDAL AGENTS
Until the advent of synthetic pesticides, all insecticides were derived from natural products, mainly terpenoids such as essential oils (e.g. tea tree, see above), pyrethrum, and quassia. |

They are distinguished from the cranberry by the reticulate vein structure and nonglandular spots beneath.
Habitat: The plant has spread from the Iberian Peninsula across Central Europe north to Scandinavia and east to Siberia. The plant is also found in the Altai mountains, the Himalayas, and in North America.
Production: Uva-Ursi (Bearberry) leaves consist of the fresh or dried leaves of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, which are gathered in the wild. The arbutin content is highest in December and January and also when the leaves are dried rapidly. |
The content of lycopene, a common carotenoid found in tomatoes as well as other fruits (apricot, cranberry, eggplant, grape, papaya, peach, guava, watermelon) varies by the color of the tomato. The very red varieties having as much as 50 mg/100 g, and the yellow varieties as little as 5 mg/100 g (Clinton, 1998).
Seventy-two to 92% of lycopene in the tomato is associated with the water insoluble fraction and the skin of the fruit. In one test, the tomato pulp had 42.3 mg/100 g of tomato, while the water-soluble portion contained only 4 mg/100 g. Five different strains were used. |

Their main claim to fame has been as a treatment for cystitis and kidney and bladder stones. cranberry juice has long been used as a home remedy—and it works.87 At least one good study has shown that it keeps bacteria from attacking the wall of the urinary tract.88 However, commercial cranberry juice is often too diluted with sugar or water to be effective. The solution is to buy 100 percent cranberry juice (available at health food stores) or to make your own cranberry juice with a juicer. |

Bacterial samples were collected before and after intervention and analyzed for both respiratory bacterial pathogens and enteric fatty acid composition, reflecting changes in the colonic bacterial flora. cranberry juice was well accepted by the children, but led to no change in either the bacterial flora in the nasopharynx or the bacterial fatty acid composition of stools (Kontiokari et al, 2005).

Since commercial cranberry juice is laden with sugar, it is best to make your own remedy from raw berries or to buy unsweetened cranberry concentrate or capsules of dried cranberry, both of which are sold in natural food stores. If you have ever tasted raw cranberries, you already know that they are much too tart to eat raw, but they can be cooked into a tasty medicine—see the recipe on page 345. Unlike cranberries, blueberries can be eaten raw.

Elderberries and cranberries are extremely high in vitamin C. For centuries, New England sea captains took cranberries with them on long voyages to prevent scurvy. Cranberries are also useful in treating and preventing urinary tract infections. You can buy cranberry juice in the grocery store, but commercial juices are loaded with sugar (to overpower cranberry's sour taste)not the best thing to eat when you have any type of infection. You're better off with an unsweetened cranberry sauce. |

In women especially, a yeast infection can be temporarily controlled in two or three days by drinking unsweetened cranberry juice or water to which a tablespoon of unpasteurized apple cider vinegar has been added. This can be done three or four times a day along with douching with a stronger solution of water and apple cider vinegar. This way, the pH of the urinary tract and vagina become slightly acid, killing the yeast.

Like the blueberry, the cranberry has its own European cousin, Vaccinium vitis idaea, or lingonberry, but the best-known varieties are the North American ones: Vaccinium oxycoc-cus (small berries) and Vaccinium macrocarpon (large berries), the latter being the variety that is now commercially cultivated.
The cranberry now occupies a relatively small place in modern diet, except, of course, as an accompaniment to Thanksgiving or Christmas holiday turkey, a tradition stretching back to 1621, when the Pilgrims celebrated their first harvest in Massachusetts. |

Supplementation with cranberry extract, grape skin extract, and grape seed extract seems to me prudent and inexpensive insurance. Want more antioxidant protection? Pycnogenols-combinations of polyphenols from tree bark and alpha lipoic acid-are superb antioxidants, as are mushroom extracts, especially reishi, cordyceps, or maitake. All enhance immune-system function, elevate the level of natural killer cells (another type of white blood cell that protect us), and improve athletic performance. |

Feed your pet one 400-milligram capsule of extract for every 20 pounds of body weight daily. cranberry stops bacteria from adhering to the walls of the bladder and acidifies the urine, says Dr. Olson. It works best to prevent an infection, so if you suspect that your pet already has one, see your vet. When there is already a huge number of bacteria rapidly multiplying in the urinary tract, your pet may need antibiotics to bring the infection under control.
"Avoid giving your pet commercial cranberry juice. It contains sugar, which negates the effect of the cranberries," says Dr. |

Just sweeten it with carrot juice, and you'll harness the health-building might of vitamin C, cranberry antioxidants, and beta carotene all in one glass!
Go to the citrus bowl. Want more of vitamin C's anti-cancer power? Load your holiday fruit salad with vitamin C-filled citrus fruits. Many citrus fruits also offer antioxidants from flavonoids or beta carotene. What's more, the fiber in citrus may foil cancer, too. To pile protection on your holiday salad, sample slices of orange, tangerine, tangelo, mandarin orange, or even grapefruit. |
Drinking cranberry juice also helps prevent LDL oxidation.
• Carrots. Crunch into a carrot, and reap the benefits of fiber and beta carotene, which your body turns into vitamin A. Studies have shown that beta carotene from foods, but not from supplements, can help your heart.
Honey is a smart substitute for sugar. Darker honey, like buckwheat honey, has greater antioxidant powers. A recent preliminary study found it can prevent LDL from being oxidized.
Chocolate. Even chocolate in small amounts might help because it's chock-full of antioxidants. |
