A more recent, large, double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluated the efficacy of 300 ml of cranberry juice in 153 women (average age 78.5) with confirmed bacteri-uria (105/ ml urine).25 Even this small an amount dramatically decreased the level of bacteria in the women's urine and the frequency of recurrence of infection. Interestingly, the researchers used saccharin-sweetened juice.
Care must be taken to avoid excessive dosages of uva ursi - as little as 15 g (0.5 ounce) of the dried leaves has been shown to produce toxicity in susceptible individuals. |

You're probably going to want to know right off the bat whether cranberry juice really helps prevent bladder infections. This one is easy: Yes, there is reason to believe that it does. And there are several other herbal treatments that can help as well.
Bladd er
Bladder infection, also called cystitis and urinary tract infection (UTI), is a bacterial infection that causes painful urination and a feeling that the bladder never completely empties. It can also cause fever and low back pain. Urine from an infected bladder may smell strong and contain tinges of blood. |
Tyler's list leads off with bearberry, a close relative of cranberry and blueberry that contains a good amount of arbutin, a natural diuretic and antibiotic.
Calling bearberry the "most effective antibacterial herb for urinary tract infections," Dr. Tyler quotes the Commission E prescription: Take ten grams a day (about a half-ounce) to treat bladder infections. This much bearberry contains anywhere from 400 to 700 milligrams of arbutin. Maximum antibacterial activity occurs three to four hours after taking this herb.
V Birch (Betula, various species). |
Tea and the juices of apple, cranberry, grape, pear, prune and strawberry all seem to help kill viruses. Tannins are usually the active components in these juices. Pear juice, which is rich in anti-herpes caffeic acid, might be your best juice choice.
Gingivitis
American Indians used bloodroot as an oral antiseptic. Modern research has shown that there is actually solid science to back up this ancient practice. The red root of this herb—from which the plant's name is derived—contains the antiseptic compound sanguinarine. |
People who advocate the healing properties of juices suggest mixing the juices of bilberry, blueberry, cranberry and huckleberry, all of which are high in anthocyanosides.
V Shepherd's purse (Cap-sella bursa-pastoris). This antioxidant herb has been used traditionally "to brighten vision," according to pharmacognosist (natural product pharmacist) Albert Leung, Ph.D. I suggest adding a little shepherd's purse to your favorite herbal teas.
Watch That Toothpaste
Here's an herb to avoid if you have glaucoma or a family history of the disease. |
This fruit and its relatives, blueberry, cranberry, huckleberry, blackberry, grape, plum and wild cherry, have been used traditionally for problems with visual acuity. And scientific research has validated this folk medicine approach.
All of these fruits contain compounds known as anthocyanosides, which are potent antioxidants. In one study, daily treatment with 400 milligrams of bilberry and 20 milligrams of the famous antioxidant beta-carotene improved many participants' night vision and enlarged their visual fields. |
Or just eat some cranberry sauce plain. These colorful berries are not just for Thanksgiving.
VV Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis). This is the best known among the "golden" herbs that contain the antibiotic berberine. Others include goldthread, yellowroot, barberry and Oregon grape. Berberine is effective against many microorganisms, including yeasts. At home, I take a tincture. In the field, I'd make a tea. You can use it either way.
VV Pau-d'arco (Tabebuia, various species). Pau-d'arco contains the anti-yeast compounds lapachol and beta-lapachone, according to Dr. Murray, Dr. |

Garlic—The herb that stops vampires in their tracks is also lethal to bacteria and viruses. Garlic contains a compound called allicin, which not only kills bacteria but is especially effective against microorganisms that can cause yeast infections.
Acidophilus—If you are on antibiotics, you run the risk of getting a yeast infection. (See "Vaginal Yeast Infections," page 262. |

If you find the juice too tart, you can get the benefit—without added sugar—by taking 1 to 2 cranberry concentrate capsules 1-3 times a day. Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water daily, and avoid caffeine, refined carbohydrates, and alcohol. Increase the natural diuretics in your diet (parsley, celery, asparagus, watercress) and decrease citrus fruits, which produce alkaline urine that can encourage bacterial growth. Along with an MVP (see section 172) you might need a potassium supplement of 95 mg. daily to replenish the potassium lost when you lose fluid. |
Proanthocyanidins are also in grape skins, bilberry, cranberry, blackcurrant, and green and black tea.)
As an antiaging supplement, I suggest taking 1-2 grapeseed extract capsules (30-100 mg.) daily.
Coenzyme-QlO, a substance that can be synthesized by the body (although it is also obtained from food) is used by our cells during the process of respiration, and deficiencies are common in the course of normal aging. |
I'd advise taking your supplements with cranberry juice. This juice coats the bacteria and helps stop it from sticking to the urinary tract.
Teenagers who suffer from "growing pains" will usually find that they disappear with an increase in calcium consumption.
Hypoglycemics could use more calcium. (I recommend calcium citrate for best absorption, in doses of 1,000-1,500 mg. daily.)
If you consume lots of soft drinks, be aware that, because they're high in phosphorus, you may be depleting your body of calcium and increasing your chances of osteoporosis. |

JUNIPER BERRY (Juniperus connumis). An evergreen shrub found in dry, rocky soil throughout North America, Europe, Asia and even the Arctic Circle. Fruit is a berrylike cone which is green the first year and ripens to a bluish-black or dark purple color in the second year.

Unsweetened cranberry juice would be fine to take, but I find it works better for the prevention of urinary tract infections rather than actually treating them."
I had other recommendations. "I want you to drink lots of water, at least eight tall glasses a day. And I don't want you eating any sugar products while we're treating you for this. Sugar can suppress the immune system. Also, I want you to take some herbs that help to eradicate the infection."

Dandelion
One person's weed is another's healing herb. The same dandelion (Taraxacum officinalis) that so many homeowners set out to pull, eradicate, or destroy has a rich history of medicinal use in Europe, China, Japan, and Russia. Even in the U.S., this herb has been used for detoxification for more than a century.
Dandelion root is revered for its ability to tonify the liver. The leaves have a natural diuretic effect—that is, they'll help remove excess water from the body. |

The medical community scoffed for decades at the notion that cranberry juice could clear up urinary tract infections. It was widely regarded as nothing more than a folk remedy.
Yet there's a rich history behind this tart berry (Vaccinium macrocarpon), and many people have reported medicinal benefits. Although I like to see scientific studies, the many stories of its healing power added up to strong empirical evidence. Now the research has caught up with the folk history. |

One study showed 73 percent of people with recurrent UTIs reported "significant improvement" after three weeks of drinking a pint of commercial cranberry juice cocktail daily. The researchers concluded that urinary acidity had nothing to do with the berries' effectiveness. Instead, they acted by preventing UTI germs from adhering to the lining of the urinary tract, thus reducing the likelihood of infection.

This helps prevent and treats urinary infections; cranberry consumption also reduces some types of kidney stones. Because cranberries contain oxalic acid, they bind calcium and are best used in moderation, especially by individuals at risk of osteoporosis. Cranberries reduce kapha.
Use While cranberries are primarily associated with Thanksgiving relish, they are also delicious and colorful in cakes, muffins, jellies, and juice. Native Americans pounded them with jerked venison and nuts or fat to make pemmican. |
