Boils
A boil is an inflamed, pus-filled area of skin, usually due to a hair follicle (the tiny pit from which a hair grows) infected with the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. A boil will usually start as a painful, red lump. As it swells it fills with pus and becomes rounded, with a yellowish tip (head). Common sites include the back of the neck and moist areas such as the armpits and groin. A more severe and extensive form of a boil is a carbuncle. |

Urinary Tract Infections
It was generally believed up until the last decade that cranberry juice prevents urinary tract infections by lowering the pH of urine. A lower pH makes for an inhospitable environment for bacteria like £ coli.
But studies done in the 1990s demonstrated that phytochemicals in cranberry—known as proanthocyandins—prevent bacteria from attaching to the bladder wall and urinary tract. Researchers also discovered that the sugar molecule fructose helped prevent a certain strain of £ coli from adhering to the urinary tract cells. |

Macular degeneration
The macula is the portion of the eye responsible for fine vision. Degeneration of the macula is the leading cause of severe visual loss in the United States and Europe in persons aged 55 years or older. The risk factors for macular degeneration include aging, atherosclerosis, and high blood pressure. There is no current medical treatment for the most common form of macular degeneration. |

Look for the low-sugar blend if you need to drink a lot of cranberry juice; sugar nourishes the offending bacteria. The easiest and simplest way to get the full benefit of cranberry without the added sugar is by taking capsules.
Garlic—The herb that stops vampires in their tracks is also lethal to bacteria and viruses. Garlic contains a compound called allicin, which not only kills bacteria but is especially effective against microorganisms that can cause yeast infections.

Many people prefer to mix their Protocel into a small amount of juice (such as apple, cranberry, grape, or tomato) to cover the taste of the formula, and doing so can make it quite pleasant to take.
There are two slightly different formulations of the Protocel formula that are currently being sold. These formulations are called "Protocel Formula 50" and "Protocel Formula 23." (Or, in Australia, "Entelev Formula 50" and Entelev Formula 23." |

His research has found the active ingredient that gives cranberry its potent anti-adhesion properties, counteracting the sticky attack and making infection much less likely. When cranberry is present, the bacteria in the bladder or urinary tract can't hold on. Without firm footing, they are essentially rendered harmless.
"The bacteria will die on their own without a place to live," says Dr. Walker. Then the natural flow of urine gives the bad guys an easy ride out of town. "It's a lot gentler to just send them out of the body like this rather than use antibiotics," he says.

This study examined the effects of cranberry juice on the adherence of Escherichia coli expressing surface lectins of defined sugar specifically to yeasts, tissue culture cells, erythroyctes, and mouse peritoneal macrophages. Results showed that it inhibited the adherence of urinary isolates expressing type 1 fimbriae (mannose specific) and P fimbriae ecific for alpha-D-Gal(l—4)-beta-D-Gal] and also inhibited yeast agglutination by purified type 1 fimbriae. In addition to cranberry juice; results found that orange juice, and pineapple juice inhibited adherence of type 1 fimbriated E. |

Do not mix Arctostaphylos uva-ursi with cranberry, because bearberry only works in an alkaline urine and cranberry renders the urine acidic. To achieve an alkaline urine when taking bearberry, avoid consuming meat, fish, poultry, or eggs. Vegetables, fruits, and dairy products create a relatively alkaline urine, because of the way in which they are metabolized in the body. Even orange or grapefruit juice, which are acid when swallowed, tend to create alkalinity in the urinary tract. |

Whatever the regional differences, one thing is constant all over the nation—the cranberry. The red berry is jellied and cut in quivering slices, stewed and served with whole berries, squeezed and poured into glasses as a cocktail; nationwide it is spiked with spirits, baked in bread, chopped into a relish, embalmed in gelatin or cubed in a salad.

In fact, studies reveal that as little as 15 ounces of cranberry juice cause an 80 percent inhibition of bacterial growth. Bacteria loses its ability to cling to the bladder wall, and must exit the system along with urine. Other research indicates that cranberry juice combined with vitamin C acidifies the urine further. The effect is therefore much greater when both are taken together.
OTHER DRINKS. Other drinks useful for temporarily acidifying the urine include lemon juice and water, buttermilk, or simply mixing two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar into a glass of water. |

General Information
The cranberry is a small evergreen shrub related to the blueberry. The plants, with their slender creeping vines, are native to open bogs and swampy marshes from Alaska to Tennessee, preferring poor acidic soil. The oblong or nearly round berries are green at first but turn red in September or October. When well protected by snow, they often will remain on the vine all winter. |
Grant considered cranberry sauce such an essential part of Thanksgiving that he ordered it served to Union troops during the siege of Petersburg in 1864. in the berry acted as a pteservative that kept the mixtute from turning rancid.
Buying Tips
Look for firm, bright-coloted, plump cranberries. Avoid those that are soft, crushed, shriveled, or soft and sticky. In eatly days berries were selected by being tolled down a shott flight of staits. Good ones bounced like little tubber balls; soft ones stayed on the steps. |

Culinary Uses
The taste of these berries is not quite as sweet as a raisin and not as tart as a dried cranberry. They are pleasing to most people. In Tibet and Mongolia, people love the berries so much that they devote two weeks a year to celebrating them, probably something like the European wine fests of times past.
Health Benefits
The most commonly cited side effect of eating too many berries is increased laughter. It is said that a handful in the morning will make you happy all day. The Goji berry has been used in traditional Mongolian and Tibetan medicine for centuries. |

Less calcium in the urine means that there may be less risk of forming new stones. cranberry juice also has a very cleansing effect on the urinary tract.

The trailing, perennial ground cover is similar to the cranberry in appearance and is widely distributed in the cool, temperate, forested zones of the northern hemisphere. Uva ursi leaves are odorless and have a bitter, astringent taste.
The key constituents of the herb are phenolic heterosides such as arbutin (5-12 %), small amounts of the free aglycone hydroquinone (0.2-0.5 %)> tannins (10-20 %), and flavonoids. The relatively high tannin content of the herb limits the duration of its use to about 2-3 weeks. The antibacterial principle is arbutin or its hydrolysis product hydroquinone. |

Petasite rhizome consists of the dried underground parts of Petasites hybridus, a native European perennial that flourishes along the banks of streams and other moist areas. The active principles are a group of sesquiterpene compounds, the petasins, which are reputed to have antispasmodic and analgesic actions based on earlier studies (Bucher, 1951). |
