Saw Palmetto
This palm tree native to the southeastern United States produces a dark berry that was used by physicians a century ago to treat urinary problems. By the 1950s, it had been abandoned.
Recently, though, several studies have shown that extract of saw palmetto berries helps treat prostate enlargement, the urinary bane of men over the age of 50. The prostate grows larger with age and eventually pinches the tube through which urine exits the body (the urethra), making it difficult for older men to empty their bladders. |

Sometimes berry crops will be heavy throughout a woodland; other times few berries are ever produced throughout a large geographic region. Almost every year a tree can be found in a stand that is so loaded with berries it appears covered with wax; such trees are popularly known as candle trees.
In the western United States, juniper also goes by the name of cedar; hence, a reference to "cedar berries" can also mean "juniper berries. |

Another use for different beny juices found to be quite popular in Europe many decades ago, was in the form of a sweet aromatic liquor known as a cordial. berry cordials were most often employed in gastrointestinal problems, such as upset stomach, diarrhea, constipation, dizziness and headaches (due to indigestion or liver or gall bladder troubles), and loss of appetite.
One such trustworthy cordial was made from the juice of pressed ripe blackberries. |

Irish moss can thin the blood, and hawthorn berry, rosemary and motherwort can improve circulation in people with heart disease. (When using herbs in the treatment of major health problems, you must consult with a health professional, Dr. Watson cautions.)
But whether using them for prevention, as home remedies or as helper substances for drugs, people are using a lot of herbs. In 1993, total sales of herbal remedies were estirnated to be about $1.5 billion, says Mark Blumenthal, executive director of the American Botanical Council in Austin, Texas. |

Siberian ginseng, witch hazel, hawthorn berry, or milk thistle seeds): Fill any size jar one-quarter to one-third full of dried, cut roots or bark or whole seeds or berries (no leaves, please). Then fill the jar completely with 100-proof alcohol. Cap it well, affix your label, and store for at least six weeks before straining and using the liquid tincture. I prefer to let tinctures made from dried materials sit for three or more months, even as long as a year, before decanting and using them.

As a nutritive endocrine agent, it is safely used to give a boost to the male sex hormones and has been reported to reverse sterility in woman where there is no organic disease or injured tissue. This berry tastes to me like rancid soap, so I find it is most palatable when taken in capsule form. For those whose nature will do well with the actions and flavor of Licorice, this herb does a decent job of covering Saw Palmetto's controversial flavor.
Siberian Ginseng is a classic adaptogen in that when taken consistently it produces a state of non-specific stress resistance. |

The familiar red "berry" is actually the enlarged, fleshy receptacle (the flower-bearing tip of the stalk), which holds the seedlike fruits on its surface. This fruit is native to America, available year round, with peak supplies available from April to June. It is enjoyed in other parts of the world, too.
NUTRITIONAL DATA
Berries contain a naturally occurring plant phenol known as ellagic acid. Scientists have observed that indigenous people who subsist on a lot of berries and nuts are virtually free of cancer. |

Melanoma
In California medical scientists list melanoma as an absolute epidemic. It has risen in incidence at a stupendous rate throughout the United States. In 1935 the individual had only a 1 in 2000 risk of developing it. Now the risk is nearly 1 in 75. That is an epidemic. |
It also contains an edible unique wild mountainous berry called Rhus coriaria (mountain sumac, unrelated to poison sumac). Wild oregano is the main active ingredient. A study published in the International Journal of Food Microbiology found that wild oregano in an amount less than 1% completely killed all fungi tested against it. In the Mediterranean the Oregamax formula is consumed by children of all ages. For children old enough to eat solids merely mix the contents of two or more capsules per day in food to ward off yeast/fungus infections. |

Ingrown toenail
This seems like a minor problem. Yet, an ingrown toenail can become extremely painful and can also result in secondary infection. It is usually caused when the individual is too aggressive with clipping of the toenail. Always clip the nail in a straight line. |

Women seem to need more iron than men do; therefore, berry juices should be a routine part of their diets.
Berries also contain measurable amounts of vitamins A and C, and calcium and phosphorus. Both vitamins are necessary for supporting strong immune defenses, while the two minerals keep bones and teeth firm, and the heart and skin healthy.
Where berries really shine nutritionally is in their remarkable trace element contents. |

Massage
Never massage directly on varicose veins, warns Elaine Stillerman, L.M.T., a massage therapist in New York City. Still, a general leg massage can help reduce swelling in the veins, she says. Sit up comfortably on a sofa or bed, with your legs raised slightly on a pillow. Now use the effleurage stroke (page 570) to work up the entire leg from the ankle to the upper thigh. |
And because even fresh berry juices are rich in natural fruit sugars, she suggests diluting four ounces of juice with an equal amount of water to get an eight-ounce serving.
She also recommends juicing a clove of fresh garlic and adding it to your vegetable juices. "Nothing prevents yeast overgrowth as well as garlic does," says Dr. Gillaspie.
For information on juicing techniques, see page 93.

Although neighboring farms had as many fruit trees and berry bushes as we did, the birds left theirs alone and came to ours. Perhaps this was because we did not use any toxic insecticides, fertilizers, or manufactured chemicals. We had our own compost heaps and bought additional organic fertilizers as needed.
What the birds knew instinctively, the humans learned more slowly. One gentleman came to visit the Ranch often because he said it was the only place where he could get relief from persistent eye ulcers. |

Also known as hila or brindall berry, garcinia is touted as an appetite suppressant that also prevents the body from making fat. Conclusive research is still lacking, however. A single human trial combined garcinia and chromium, resulting in a few more pounds of weight loss in obese volunteers than a low-fat diet alone, but the study's design has led some experts to question whether it's conclusive.

SAW PALMETTO berry acts directly on the enlarged prostate to reduce inflammation, pain and throb (5). In sub-hypertrophied cases, it may also reduce swelling to some degree, but in case of true hypertrophy it is not known whether the herb brings relief by decreasing gland size or by reducing pain and irritation. It also increases the bladder's ability to contract and expel its contents (6). |
SAW PALMETTO berry also contains anti-inflammatory principles, as well as being a strong expectorant. Its primary purpose in this blend is to remove catarrh from the mucous membranes. Saw Palmetto is best known for its effects on sexual function. See Also INFERTILITY; DIABETES; FEMALE TONIC: PROSTATE, NERVES & GLANDS; THYROID; DIGESTION

STARTING DOSAGE:
• Fresh or frozen whole berry: for therapeutic benefit, eat 1 to 2 pounds per week.
Berries are my favorite fruits. They are low in calories and high in colorful flavonoid nutrients. Flavonoids aid in the body's absorption and utilization of vitamin C, which is synthesized from plant and yeast sugars.
Modern scientists now agree that chemical waste products (secondary metabolites) produced by plants, including plant pigments, can act as protective agents which can repel insect herbivores through a variety of mechanisms. |
Schisandra berry is one of my first choices in the treatment of neurasthenia, along with milky oat seed tincture, skullcap tincture, and ashwagandha root. Neurasthenia—nerve weakness, fatigue, and pallor—is a condition that has reemerged as a synonym for chronic fatigue or other stress-related disorders. Historically, TCM doctors have always considered this fruit to be a superior medicine, able to prolong life. One reason for its reputation is that it contains five tastes. |
