The herbal portion of this nine-point program, HCA, is technically known as hydroxycitric acid, a readily available substance found in the brindle berry (Garcinia cambo-gia) and other Asian fruits. HCA reduces cravings for sweets and enhances the effectiveness of the body's own insulin. Used for years as an herbal alternative to diet drugs, HCA allows the muscles of the body to absorb more glucose, the sugar in the bloodstream that is the body's main form of fuel. The chromium taken with the HCA also helps with the absorption of glucose by the muscles.
The use of glucose is important. |

One acerola berry contains almost 10 times more vitamin C than a similar amount of guava.
The benefits of vitamin C go beyond relieving cold symptoms. It also helps the body make collagen, a tough, fibrous protein that helps build connective tissue, skin, bones, and teeth and that plays a role in wound healing. Vitamin C also helps protect the body from free radicals, cell-damaging oxygen molecules thought to contribute to the development of cancer, heart disease, and many other conditions.

The FDA has disregarded or rejected competent scientific evidence that Serenoa repens, a standardized extract of the saw palmetto berry, can help shrink an enlarged prostate in middle-aged men. Meanwhile, another more expensive, more toxic, and less effective drug, for the same purpose, has been approved by the FDA. They knew that the published evidence showed the superiority of the Serenoa, but their action exposed 10 million men to unnecessary risks.

For the same results, you can take a bioflavonoid supplement or 2,000 milligrams of berry extract a day, says Dr. Maes. The best are those that have a combination of all the bioflavonoids or the extracts of several different berries, he says.
Bioflavonoids affect other body processes as well as uric acid production. Researchers have found that they help in tissue building and can prevent the release of some compounds that promote inflammation.

Wheat berry has a little stronger action than sweet rice, but is not as effective as the other recommendations. It can be eaten as sourdough bread, cooked berries, or other unrefined forms of the grain; it can also be taken as an herbal tea. Crushed or whole oyster shell (Ostrea gigas; Mandarin: mu li) and clam shell (Meritricix meritrix; Mandarin: hai ge he) are available from Chinese herb stores or can be gathered at clean ocean beach areas. In their whole form, these shells need to be crushed before decocting into a tea. |

Indeed, one of its main source, the brindle berry, is commonly used as a flavoring in curry in many Asian countries. It is also used as a preservative and digestive aid. Researchers at Hoffmann-La Roche, the pharmaceutical company that has conducted a large amount of HCA research, consider hydroxycitrate to be safer than the citric acid in oranges and other citrus fruits.
• HCA makes the body more receptive to insulin.
People with type 2 diabetes usually have sufficient insulin in their bloodstream to allow glucose into the muscles. |
Conte went to work, educating Anne Marie on the adverse effects of high glucose levels and the mechanisms behind the HCA, or brindle berry extract. She began to understand the interrelationship between diabetes and obesity.
Within eight weeks, she was on her way to reversing a long-standing trend. Her glucose level fell to 128 in those eight weeks of HCA use, her cholesterol had decreased to 217, and the triglycerides were down to 226. She had also lost nearly twenty pounds, and said she felt healthier as a result of being lighter. |

Several studies on vitex berry, an herb that is known to reduce hormone levels and decrease their action, have been reported in various German scientific journals. These studies indicate that vitex helps control acne in young men and women. For women, vitex has been particularly helpful in alleviating premenstrual symptoms, and is especially useful in eliminating acne that flares up right before menstruation. Vitex is available in natural food stores as a tincture, as tea, or in pill form. For more information on the virtues of vitex, see chapter 11. |

Bitter also increases intestinal muscle contractions. |
In addition to its use as a cereal or cereal cream (from flour), roasted barley can be ground to a powder and stirred into hot water as a drink, or decocted as a tea in its whole berry form. Both the tea and drink relieve summer heat and fatigue, and act as digestive aids and coffee substitutes. |
It is often used for treating diarrhea, constipation (use whole berry), poor digestion, colitis, and various other intestinal disorders.
A relative of wheat with origins in Southeast Asia, spelt was brought to the Middle East more than 9,000 years ago, and has since spread over the European continent. Very recently, spelt has enjoyed renewed popularity in Europe as a result of translations of mystical writings of 12th-century healer St. Hilde-gard of Bingen, who praised spelt as the grain best tolerated by the body. |

A professional buyer checks out the freshness of the grapes by examining the amount of bloom on the berry. Bloom is the name given to the waxy, powderlike coating applied by nature to protect the fruit from the direct rays of the sun. This coating is more obvious on the darker-colored grapes, but it is also present, though not as easily detected, on the light-colored varieties. The heavier the bloom, the fresher the grape. As the grape starts to age and break down (after one to two weeks), the bloom disappears. Color is very important, especially in the green varieties. |

American physicians recognized the usefulness of saw palmetto in hormonal regulation as early as 1856. Doctors prescribed teas of whole dried palmetto berries for breast enlargement, muscle building, and prostate problems.
Saw palmetto has since gained widespread use by doctors and alternative health practitioners as a safe treatment for prostate disorders. |

Vitex (chaste berry) is indicated for threatened miscarriage if progesterone levels are relatively low. Otherwise key herbs are Chamaelirium luteum (helonias root) and Dioscorea (wild yam). There's the red, white, or black berry that grows on shrubs and the tiny dried and seedless Zante grape, similar to a raisin. Whichever version of the currant you choose, you're sure to reap healthy benefits.
If you go with the Zante grape, which came to be called "currant" because it hails from Corinth, Greece, you get a boatload of fiber. A cup of these dried fruits gives you 9 grams.
Red and white currants are merely different colors of the same variety. A cup of these sweet berries provides nearly 5 grams of fiber. |

Called integrated pest managment or IPM, this alternative strategy relies on careful crop and insect monitoring to detect when pesticide applications will have the optimum effect so as to minimize their use; cultural practices such as crop rotation to help break the pest's reproductive cycle; biological controls, like the pheromones, to confuse the male grape berry moth; and the use of cover crops and plant varieties that resist pests. The example of solving mosquito control by designing a drainage system for potholes with standing water is an example of an IPM solution. |

In an uncontrolled trial, mean systolic pressure fell from 205 mmHg to 148 mmHg and mean diastolic pressure fell from 112 mmHg to 83 mmHg in hypertensive patients receiving hawthorn berry tincture.
