Atanasoff and his assistant Clifford berry in 1942 built the first operational computer that used vacuum tubes to perform mathematical operations. It was called the Atanasoff berry Computer, or ABC. The ABC used binary numbers that were stored in capacitors mounted on a rotating drum; it could perform operations with 16-digit binary numbers, which correspond to eight-digit decimal numbers.
Around the same time, several other scientists and engineers started devising and building electronic computing machines. |

The three-lobed carpels may be free or united and develop into a berry, drupe or nut.
Distribution
The family, with about 2700 exclusively evergreen woody species, is widely distributed in the tropics and subtropics.
Chemical characteristics of the family
The accumulation of polyphenols, some relatively simple alkaloids (especially pyridine derivatives) and steroidal saponins, as well as fatty acids [coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) and oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.)] is typical. |
The taxa have bisexual, radial flowers with five fused sepals, mostly five fused petals, five stamens and two gynaecia, which generally develop into a berry or a capsule.
Distribution
This family of about 2600 species is particularly well represented in South and Central America, but is widely distributed in most parts of the world.
Chemical characteristics of the family
Typical for the family are alkaloids, especially of the tropane, nicotine and steroidal type (Fig. 4.16). Many taxa are characterized by oxalic acid, which often forms typical structures (e.g. |

Forget commercially-available hawthorne berries. They are of low quality, with the berries being harvested when they are dried-out and lower in vital chemicals. This is done because it is easier to harvest dry berries by shaking the tree.
Berries should be harvested at peak of ripeness, by picking them off the tree. This takes more effort and money, which is why it isn't done. |

Everybody looks forward to berry season, and with good reason. Berries bring a wonderful burst of flavor to fruit salads and smoothies. They're upbeat day-brighteners. The strawberry hails from Europe and the Americas, raspberries originated in the Middle East, and currants come from central Asia. Man has been relying on them for millennia. For example, physicians in Ancient Rome used strawberries to cure scurvy.
Therapeutic and Healing Powers: In spite of their small size, berries pack a therapeutic punch because of their high flavonoid content. |

The hawthorn berry is considered a smart herb with adaptogenic qualities in regard to normalizing blood pressure. Hawthorn gains much of its hypotensive and weight management properties through its diuretic action. Also, its ACE inhibiting factors interrupt the renin-angiotensin sequence, resulting in lower blood pressure and improved cardiac output (Duke 2000b). Clinicians compare the effectiveness of hawthorn to Captopril, a drug prescribed for congestive heart failure (CHF) and hypertension that also works by inhibiting ACE. |
