Hawthorn Berry
Hawthorn berry is another herb that I frequently use in my cardiology practice. Although hawthorn has been used medicinally for centuries, in the last one hundred years it has become increasingly popular as a remedy for various cardiac problems. In fact, European physicians often prescribe hawthorn as a substitute for digitalis, perhaps the most popular medicine in the United States for enhancing the contractility of a weakened heart. However, the herbal properties of hawthorn far exceed this indication.
Hawthorn is a shrub that is often grown as a hedge. |

Historical or Traditional Use
In the early part of this century, saw palmetto berry tea was commonly recommended for benign enlargement of the prostate. It was also used to treat chronic urinary tract infections. Some believed that the berry increased sperm production and sex drive in men.
Active Constituents
The liposterolic (fat-soluble) extract of saw palmetto provides fatty acids, sterols, and esters. The extract is thought to reduce the amount of dihydrotesterone (an active form of testosterone) locally in the prostate. |

Theologian-ecologist Thomas berry has pointed out that while we have moral teachings for homicide and suicide, they are lacking for biocide and geocide. Mary Evelyn Tucker and John A Grim, editors of the anthology Worldviews and Ecology, have put the situation this way: "Our ethics have remained largely anthropocentric (the belief that only humans count) and indifferent to the fate of the natural world. This is changing gradually as we re-examine the nature of human-Earth relations and begin to build the basis for sustainable life in the future... |

Hawthorn berry. Hawthorn is an overall heart tonic that works against arrhythmia, angina, blood pressure, and hardening of the arteries. It aids circulation, as well as ameliorating valvular insufficiency and an irregular pulse. Hawthorn berry can also correct acid conditions of the blood, and can be safely taken every day.
Mistletoe. Mistletoe is a cardiac tonic that stimulates circulation. Fifteen drops taken three times a day, or three cups of tea daily, help lower blood pressure and alleviate heart strain. Mistletoe should not be overused, nor should the berries be eaten.

Because it grows in clusters on certain varieties of desert cactus, the prickly pear is technically a berry. The fruit is oval and has spiny thorns, which should be removed before handling. The skin and flesh have several hues—orange, red, and purple. The firm flesh tastes something like watermelon and contains edible seeds. The Aztecs used prickly pears to mitigate fevers and soothe irritated livers. The Pima Native Americans apply prickly pear pads to the breasts of nursing mothers to increase milk flow. |

Watching your weight? If so, berries couldn't be better for you! Ideal as low-calorie sweets, they pack a bonus, too, by supplying fiber that apparently helps you absorb fewer of the calories that you do eat.

There are also a number of herbs that can be helpful, including hawthorn berry and the Ayurvedic herb guggulow. In two-year study on rabbits, guggulow significantly lowered cholesterol and blood fats, as well as protected against atherosclerosis-induced artery damage.
CHOLESTEROL-BUSTERS
In addition to the general dietary recommendations outlined above, you should be aware of a number of foods with such powerful positive effects that they deserve to be in a category of their own.
Garlic
Studies have shown that eating just one-half clove of garlic per day can decrease cholesterol levels. |

The tart and exotic acerola berry is also known as the West Indian cherry. Nutritionists know it for its vitamin C, with a single berry packing a generous 81 milligrams. That's 25 percent more than the official recommended allowance in each tiny fruit. You can't get this much of your daily vitamin C allowance from just a bite or two of an orange!
The acerola's distinction as a powerhouse of vitamin C has obscured an equally important fact: Acerola berries are low in calories, weighing in at only about 2 apiece. |

During that time the berry "appeared to prevent urinary tract infections in nineteen of them—a sixty-seven-percent success rate," report the researchers. In another test, people took cranberry concentrate capsules equal to a twelve-ounce glass of the cocktail. The capsule worked also, but did not cure those already suffering with urinary tract infections.
There is also evidence that cranberries help retard formation of or even help dissolve calcium-type kidney stones. The mechanism of the action is unknown. |
However, cranberry juice cocktail—from twenty-five to thirty-three percent pure berry juice—taken right off store shelves proved plenty potent. The bacteria were even rendered helpless when the juice was diluted to one part juice per hundred parts water, so powerful is the agent.
Here's what probably happened, says Dr. Sobota: The bacteria attach themselves to cells through thousands of hollow rodlike structures called pili. These pili are the docking tentacles that hook into cell surfaces. |

HISTORY
The history of strawberries goes back more than 2,200 years. Native to many parts of the world, hundreds of varieties of strawberries exist due to accident and planned crossbreeding techniques. |

The extract of the saw palmetto berry has been shown in scientific studies to be about three times more effective than the Merck prostate drug, Proscar, for alleviating symptoms of prostate enlargement," Dr. Whitaker reports. "Furthermore, saw palmetto extract has no toxicity." On the other hand, Proscar causes impotence, ejaculation dysfunction, decreased libido, and birth defects.'Yet, the FDA recommended that saw palmetto berry be removed from the market while allowing Proscar to remain available. Fortunately, this recommendation has not been implemented. |

Chaste Tree berry [Vitex agnus-castus)
Chaste tree berry is native to the Mediterranean but has spread to central Asia. It is the fruit of this herb, containing volatile oils with a peppermintlike scent, that is used medicinally. Vitex has unique effects on the reproductive system. It appears to have a corpus luteum effect, causing an increase in luteinizing hormone production, while inhibiting the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). |
Its actual components are chlorella; milk thistle; echinacea; probiotic cultures; European bilberry; organically and hydroponically grown soy sprouts; acerola berry juice powder; ultra lecithin; Hawaiian spirulina; organically grown alfalfa, barley, wheat grass, and red beet juice powder; royal jelly; Montana bee pollen; grape seed; green tea; licorice root; Siberian ginseng; dunaliela salina (a type of seaweed); astragalus; natural vitamin E; Nova Scotia dulse; and pharmaceutical-grade ginkgo biloba.

How to take
Capsules containing standardized extract of hawthorne berry (2% standard) usually contain 100-250 mg of extract. Typical doses for congestive heart failure would be 250 mg, twice per day. Higher doses are sometimes recommended, but when comprehensive health promotion programs are initiated, and other effective supplements are included, it is often unnecessary to use the higher level of any one supplement.

Very occasionally a manufacturer overcoats a batch of tablets and, particularly in people with a shortage of stomach acid, this can inhibit the tablet's disintegration. Most reliable companies check the disintegration time of each batch to rule out this possibility, so it is a rare problem.
